3G iPhone and BMW BT

Thought I would post here before I go on a crazy search.

I picked up the 3G this past weekend, nothing interesting to report, it's very similar to the Gen 1.

But I noticed, when using the Blue Tooth in the car, I have a slight echo of my voice that broadcasts through the speakers.

Any tips to correct this?

p.s. - I have noticed, the call quality of the phone service is better. The GSM network was always a compromise coming from Verizon which had great call quality. It does seem like the new phone is up to Verizon standards even though it's ATT.

brian5 08-04-2008 06:21 AM

Unfortunately, this is a common problem :(

I have seen MANY reports on this echo, while using bluetooth, in Apple-oriented forums. People have been complaining about it in BMWs and in MBs too. They say it generally does not happen with the first-generation iPHone with 2.0 update; just with the iPhone 3G. Complaints to Apple have not come up with any answers either.

These two things have helped some people:
1. Turn 3G off (which we'd obviously rather not do), or
2. Set the iPhone volume higher and car speakers lower. Remove the initial pairing by deleting the iPhone pairing. Set the iPhone volume to 75% and re-pair.

I haven't used mine enough to be sure about the echo yet.

I don't have 3G in my area, and my iPhone still echos in my car. I think there might be something with a software update... :dunno:

Well, I'm going to be up in your neck of the woods on Saturday so just checked AT&T's coverage map. Didn't realize that 3G stopped in Massachusetts... From the coverage map, looks like I'll be in a lot of areas where there is no service at all. Well, it'll be nice to be disconnected for a while

Yeah, it cuts off around the Hampton Tolls...
Where are you going, the only place in the state that I can't get a signal is my lakehouse (which is in a fairly populated area :dunno:)... Most of the time, if no AT&T, it'll just jump on the Unicel network.

Watch out for the new 'Stang

Quicksilver 08-04-2008 11:00 AM

Hey B

I'm glad you posted this. I didn't want to give up my Verizon service for exactly the reasons you stated. I also heard (i could be wrong) that if you turn off wifi the echo goes away.

Yeah, I know it's OT but most of week will be on Mt. Desert Island. Sure I'll be doing some driving back onto the mainland too... Will look for the new 'Stang :)

You'll be fine.. Might see me, too, I'm heading up to BHB for a weekend of flying.

Don't quote me on this, but I don't believe I had my wifi enabled when I first got the echo.. I will check it this afternoon..

The funny thing is, I was driving the dually today and we have an aftermarket Kenwood installed. I was using the BT no problem in there..
So it's obviously a BMW compatibility problem and not a universal one.

I will do some problem solving and let you know how it goes..

Quicksilver 08-04-2008 09:23 PM

Download the update. Maybe that will fix the problem.

Echo's like that in any cell phone are caused by the phone's mic not having noise cancellation technology such as like a Polycom conference room phone.

Is it just my crazy imagination, or does the battery on the new 3G drain faster than a keg on Gameday?

Is it searching for a cell? That used to happen a lot with Nextel when it couldn't find a tower.

Make sure you have the push email turned off and use fetch instead. The push kills the battery.

B-Line 08-05-2008 02:11 AM

Ok, lets check it:

Push - Off
Bluetooth - Off
Wifi - Off
Brightness - Dim

Wow, maybe now I can make a phone call, LOL.

X5audi 08-05-2008 02:32 AM

B-Line, you're not crazy. The 3G actually has less battery life than the old one. I'm holding out until they give it a proper redesign to get rid of my "outdated" iPhone.

Yep, battery ran down pretty quickly :( I let my battery run completely down twice and now it definitely seems to be lasting longer. This seems like a device that will need charging every two days --- which I don't mind as it stays in a cradle a lot of the time.

Dam this battery is crap! About 7 hours with medium use and no web usage. I think the 3G is the problem. What would be the point to turn off Push? I want my e-mail push to me as I use this as a business phone.

ps. Barry it is okay for you to buy the iPhone 3G. ;)

BruinMan 08-05-2008 11:11 AM

FYI, on Monday night a new version is available: 2.01 from iTunes.

As i said earlier the point is to preserve battery life..... You can decide.... Longer battery life or quicker emails??????? I use my phone for business as well but I'm okay with a <15 minute delay in getting my messages in order to continue getting them later in the day.

Wow! I turned off push and have been on this thing all morning. Still full! What else is wierd is that my emails (roadrunner, gmail, and hacked firstclass) come through much faster than on push.... They even beat mac mail!

B-Line 08-05-2008 02:13 PM

I did let my battery drain the first time I used the phone. I didn't know draining it again was helpful...

So, I'm draining it again !

because the phone has to maintain a connection for the push to work. if you schedule it say every 15-20 minutes, the phone will only reconnect when it fetches your email.

Just another reason that bberry isn't in danger of being made obsolete by the Iphunk.

The batteries in the Iphone do NOT suffer from memory issues. It's a lithium battery. Don't waste your time. In fact, draining a lithium battery is bad for it.

Quicksilver 08-05-2008 02:43 PM

Yeah I know. Might be a good thing too except my wife has AT&T & i have Verizon. We have different providers in order to make sure we always have service no matter where we are.

Lately i have been re-considering the need for a smart phone in favor of a no frills phone(no internet, no music, no e-mail.) But it seems those are hard to find these days.

I know it's a lithium battery. But my battery life was just RIDICULOUSY poor out of the box.

My phone's battery life improved after draining the battery twice... Others may not see the same results -- I'm just saying what I did that improved my battery life...

I did do a firmware upgrade to 5A347 (by doing a restore in iTunes) around the same time so it is possible that did improve my battery life instead.

I know little to nothing about how batteries work so I wouldn't know how to argue with you. You're probably right.

But I was specifically told by the salesman at the Apple store to drain the battery down before it's 1st charge.

I assumed he was speaking on behalf of Apple and the technology, but he could have just been talking out his arse... :dunno:

Despite the fact that he didn't drop trow on you and start conversing with you directly from his butt, he was indeed talking out of his ass :)

His advice is great for NMh based batteries, and idiotic for lithium. you can google it if you wish.

OK, I googled it. I found Apple's page for improving iPhone battery performance. There's a whole list of things and one of them are "For proper maintenance of a lithium-based battery, it’s important to keep the electrons in it moving occasionally. Be sure to go through at least one charge cycle per month (charging the battery to 100% and then completely running it down)." So I guess the advice that B-Line got from the Apple employee to let it run down matches this recommendation...

Apple's iPhone battery link

And gresh, you are correct. As a rule, these lithium batteries should not be run down. My battery's performance was just unacceptable and I wanted to try running it down. Otherwise I was going to have to return it to the Apple store for a replacement...

Good to see that your Sarcasm Recognition System is working properly :)

carlgo 08-06-2008 12:16 PM

I just want to bitch about AT&T coverage. Not all of us live in urban centers. Making a phone call is as important as 3G, etc.

Conservatives will hate me, but when I become Grand Beloved Leader, a company that wants to be in the cell phone business will be required to provide coverage to populated areas and highways. Or I won't accept their contributions, probably.

I live in Maine, it works fine. I don't live in Caribou or Banger either.
I go to school in the backwoods of South Carolina. It works fine.
I have a camp 6 miles from the Canadian border in the middle of nowhere. Its a little spotty there, but generally works fine.
You live... In California.

Mobilme is good if you want to have, your home cpu, your work cpu, your laptop and your iphone, all sharing the same info.

Ok, see, now I'm confused..

I thought if you had a .mac account, than Mobilme was the free upgrade. It seems as though, SYNC is replaced by Mobilme and I thought the $99 charge was for people who didn't have an existing .MAC account.

Meiac09 08-06-2008 09:35 PM

.mac is $99/year too

Meiac,

I think they are now one and the same.... You don't need both, you don't need to buy .me if you already have, .mac

It's more service for the same price.

Mobilme is the new version of .Mac

(I think)....

But I quickly figured out, you use the same name and password as .MAC. And if you didn't have a .MAC account, they give you a .ME account, but if you did have a .MAC account, then you automatically have a .MAC and a .ME account.

Again, don't quote me on it, but that's how I think it works.

Mobilme = .MAC
