Ipod: Decision

After looking at MANY mp3/dap's, and probably to gresch's dismay, I have ended up with the Ipod. Nothing else can match the interface/size. I hate Itunes, but there are ways around it now. I have about 35gb of music, so I need at least a 30gb player. I really wish Apple had made a non-color 4g 30gb version as I really don't need that.

Here is my dilemma: I can get a Apple Certified (Refurbished) 30gb Photo for $299 shipped directly from Apple which comes with a 90day warranty. I can get a brand-new one for $320 shipped. So I am wondering if these things are reliable enough for me to get just the refurbished one. I was hoping to spend about$50 on earphones.

Tough call. Sometimes the refurbished ones are better as they have latest firmware, but may have some signs of use/abuse. You may look into getting the 60gb and use to store pics/ data as well. They start at $355 for 5th generation......Amazon has for $385.

I considered that and the 40gb, but aren't those physically bigger?

What exactly is the difference between 4g and 5g?

The 40's and 60's are a little thicker than the 20's. The 30 is just a little thicker than the 20 by a couple of millimeters if that. A friend of mine bought a 30gb color at the Apple Store. They no longer sell the 30gb color and it's not listed on their iPod charts in the stores. They only sell the 20, 40, and 60. All are color. He just happened to find an Apple Store, in Chicago, that had some of the 30's left. (It's the store by where I posted the picture from my ZZ Top tour, of the Audi S4 that got smacked up.)

Apple does not like to call the newer versions 5th gens. They still refer to them as 4g. The difference I have heard about between the older 4g and the newer ones is the color screen and better battery life, which is supposed to be significantly better.

I would pay the extra $20 and get a brand new one. There's nothing like a virgin. :D

Well, if I got the 30gb photo, I think I'd automatically get the older gen since they don't make them anymore. btw, the one for $320 is on ebay. He has a 100 of them in stock.

You can always upgrade the firmware by downloading it from their website.

the past couple of years I have bought a few refurbished Apple products with no problems at all, the only thing you don't get is the nice box it comes in when new, but who cares... Great bargains in my opinion.

Really? I thought that the new color ones were all the the newer version because the initial intro of the iPod Photo was a 60gb. I might be wrong but if you confirm this, let me know. I hope my friend got a newer one.
