Maxima got 29+ MPG yesterday.

Put some premium in the tank and headed out in my 2008 Maxima for a hour long drive down to 'Naptown. On the way the MPG rating was 29+ MPG. Bounced from 28.7-30.1MPG. Pretty good if you ask me for a 4 door sedan with close to 250hp/tq. Crappy pics enclosed below (sunlight glare and cell phone equal poo)

Avg speed was around 70-75 mph.

:)

Pretty good.

I have broken 30 mpg US, 37 mpg Imperial, with the 535i. That is with steady highway cruising in the mountains, two people plus luggage, 92 pump octane, and not taking any particular advantage of the 300+ hp. I think both figures are good for reasonably sized, performance-oriented vehicles (but I get to shift a real transmission, lol)

And people think they need diesels. Bring on twin turbos, direct injection, and intelligent design, and it matters a whole lot less whether the engine is using the Otto cycle or the compression-ignition cycle.

edit: fixed typo

Haha, I should have put in "and that is WITHOUT a manual"

Weasel 09-20-2008 04:40 PM

Just think, you probably would have got 33-35+ with a manual. Today's cars are definitely getting more fuel efficient, and not by cutting power. Just more precise engine software and calibration.

Well designed cylinder heads fo da win!

I think the 29 miles to the gallon is normal? I remember when we test drove an '04 AT, the EPA sticker said 20/29 US mpg.

Weasel 09-20-2008 06:27 PM

I do average 28 to 32 mpg in my old 93 325is on the highway...

Same here with a 94 325i. 27-28 with a/c, 28+ without and I don't try to save very much fuel. I am a little heavy on the gas.

For the Bimmer comparisons, I'd expect that from a I4 making under 150hp, not a 3.5 V6 making over 250hp :)

Haha, I wish:

The powertrain of the 2008 Nissan Maxima is a carry-over from the previous year's model. Nissan's award-winning VQ-series V6 and Xtronic CVT (continuously variable transmission) team up to propel the 3,600-pound midsize sedan. The result is a maximum of 255 horsepower and 252 pound-feet of torque sent to the front wheels. Despite no option of a manual gearbox, the CVT offers pseudo ratios for use when additional control is desired. More realistic 2008 EPA estimates rate the Maxima at 19 mpg city and 25 mpg highway.

FSETH 09-21-2008 11:42 AM

That is good mileage from a Maxima. They are not known to be gas sippers.

Only 325's were referenced. I6 w/mods. Mine has dinan chip, full exhaust w/long tube headers, etc. and should be about 230ish at the crank. And I drive it with my foot pretty far down its throat. When I drive really conservatively on the highway, I get 33 - 34 mpg easy at abou 70 -75mph.

But how does that CVT transmission feel, I haven't had a chance to drive a car with it yet... just a couple 4-wheelers that have it. And I really like it on the quads.

AzNMpower32 09-21-2008 01:31 PM

I don't see why a modern day 330i can't achieve over 30 miles to the gallon :dunno: On average, I can achieve 20% better than what the EPA says. Or I just look at the combined cycle for the EU.

By the way, a 143bhp, I-4 BMW can achieve about 47 miles to the gallon on the highway.

I managed 33.5, on a 1,000 mile road trip at the speed limit from SC to CT in my 325xi

Oh sorry, read that wrong...189hp I6 as opposed to 255hp V6. That mileage is pretty good considering factory specs were around 19/28 city/highway.

Since manual isn't an option, I like it as opposed to a standard automatic or even a "sports shift" automatic. The trans always stays in the power band, with no searching around for the right RPM.
