I'm all for it -I use my DRLs all the time already. What convinced me was when I was in Denmark about 10 years ago on a very hot day with very high heat-haze - the DRLs just cut through all the haze and increased the visibility dramitically. So they are not just beneficial in low-light situations.

I am a fan of daytime running lights. I understand the concerns of motorcyclists, who want to keep the 'more visible' benefit to themselves, but I think there are benefits overall to having them on all vehicles.

There are two implementations: some vehicles put the dash lights on with the DRLs, and others don't. Those vehicles that do run dash lights at the same time create problems because some drivers don't realize they need their actual lights on to get either headlights or any tail lights, so I think that dash lights should not be on at the same time as DRLs.

What I don't get is that some people pull fuses or otherwise disable them simply because of the right to choose argument, while agreeing that they do have safety benefits. That just seems like cutting off your nose to spite your face to me.

And here comes my 0.02-

As for the benefits of DRL's- You're driving +two tons, you should have your head out of your ass in doing so- If the environment calls for you to turn on your lights, then do so. Motorcycles are hard to see, so pay attention. That should be the MO at all times, regardless of what is hard to see on the road.

Canada- We hand out instructor licenses to anyone who doesn't run over the issuer_ DRLs are an attempt to legislate intelligent behavior behind the wheel. Get a program in place that teaches new and current drivers that speed(any)+ limited instruction= problems. Make sure instructors are conversant in new techniques and vehicle dynamics. Make re-certification mandatory. Make sure new drivers are fully versed in all types of driving conditions, including high speed situations.

I live and work in an area that redefines "paying attention while driving" and while it is a freak show out there when it comes to speed and road rule observation, I can tell you that I am a better driver for it- You Pay Attention ALL The Time.
