iTunes 5.01
 

Those of you who were affected by the problems in the iTunes 5.0 released last week, you can download the latest version 5.0.1 today from Apple's website.

I installed 5.0.1.4 tonight. I was synching the Ipod with new tunes for a long drive tomorrow. Was I just lucky, or were there serious problems with 5.0?

Thanks Tito. I just downloaded it after installing 5.0 the other night. My iPod wasn't syncing and it's still not syncing even after updating to 5.0.1. Arrgh!!! :mad: I even rebooted and it still no workie. What am I doing wrong?

I think the last time I synced my iPod I used it as a HD to upload my Outlook contacts. My PC is recognizing that the iPod is attached and opens up the iPod's HD as if it's just a removable drive. iTunes tells me that the software needed to communicate with my iPod is not installed properly and instructs me to reinstall iTunes but I just did the installation successfully. What gives?

iTune also has updates for the iPod as well. Make sure yours is up to date. In review not only must you install iTunes update but the iPod updater as well. I had to do that within the last week. iPod updater is dated 9/6/2005

Don't know about serious issues but here's what the update includes. "iTunes 5 features a new even more powerful instant search, including the new Search Bar which helps you find exactly what you are looking for in iTunes or from among 2 million songs on the Music Store, folders for organizing playlists, and new Parental Controls for music, music sharing and podcasts. iTunes 5.0.1 features several stability improvements over iTunes 5".

I had updated the iPod with the 6-26-05 update so it is current. (The newest version is the same as 6-26-05 but only adds nano support.) Besides, when I run the iPod Updater program it gives me an error. At this point, the only thing that happens when I plug my iPod in is that a Windows Explorer window opens up to display the iPod as my K drive. iTunes does not show the iPod as being connected and certainly doesn't show the little iPod icon in the lower right corner.

I think that iTunes is not seeing the iPod as an iPod. Instead, Windows is taking over and treating it like a regular HD. I had enabled this ability to upload Outlook contacts but never turned it off and now I'm stuck. I'm almost ready to start from scratch and remove and reinstall iTunes and hard reset my iPod but I don't want to lose my 10GB worth of music I have ripped to iTunes.

You still have the songs on your hard drive in iTunes right. If so
resetting the iPod won't interfere with the music you have saved.
Maybe resetting the iPod might be the way to go first.

I decided to roll back and found my orginal iPod CD. Instead of uninstalling iTunes, I just threw the CD in. The CD updated my updater, complained about iTunes already being installed, restarted the computer, and booyah! My 5.1 iTunes talks and shares music with my iPod!

I guess I'll buy the round for myself...

My iPod is an iPod photo (60 GB) (also known as iPod with color display) 2004-10 Click Wheel 60 GB 1.2

The CD I used to update the updater was the iPod 3.0.2 CD.

To go one step farther I've uploaded the Updater portion of the CD I used to the following url for download, hope it helps, size is 15.5MB:

Posts: 1 Jake thanks for posting that updater. I have an ipod photo 40gig, I tried using the CD I got it had the (10-2004) version of the updater. I had uninstalled itunes and ipod, so I later installed 5.01 and installed the updater from the cd. I still got the same communcation error.
After playing around, I finally uninstalled itunes and the updater again, and I deleted both the itunes and the ipod folders off the program files.
Then reinstalled, itunes, and then installed the updater I got from Jake (i think its version 08-2004). Finally I was able to get my itunes an ipod communicating again.

You d' man! Thanks for digging up that information for me. I had tried to soft reset the iPod a few times without fixing the communication error. I did as your post suggested and so far so good. iTunes recognized my iPod and connected after rolling back my iPod Updater to 08-06-04 from 06-26-05. It is now busily updating, I think, all the songs in my iTunes library. I won't know if it totally works until tomorrow since I'm off to bed. I will also have to wait and see if my Contacts got deleted from the iPod. I don't think that it was my uploading of Outlook contacts/using the iPod as a HD that caused this mess. It must be a Microsoftesque snafu where they released a newer version(s) of iTunes that caused problems communicating with the latest firmware version.

Thanks again. I'll post whether I was successful or not.
