I've had it, getting new suv

What suv drives like the x5 but is more reliable? I am tired of all the bloody problems I've had in the past year!

I might go for a 5 series if I can find one.

blondboinsd 11-12-2008 08:48 PM

I like my Tourareg, it does not corner as well but the suspension soaks up bumps much better then my SP x5

Just curious, why would you go to a 5 series? The X5 is based on the 5er.

Go with an Acura/MB/etc..

the closest things would be a Merc ML sport or Porsche Cayenne, but those will be as reliable as BMW

jmweb 11-12-2008 09:38 PM

Do they drive the same?

Porsche is a reliable vehicle isn't it?

mrkbbd 11-12-2008 09:42 PM

I hope that's a joke, nothing German is reliable...you buy it out of love not out of practicality

Acura MDX is more reliable and still considered "sporty" by some people. Give it a test-drive.

it's hardly sporty, maybe compared to a lexus LX570, but Acura's definition of sport is much different than a BMW driver's definition. The Acura would be a great everyday car though because it is comfortable and relatively powerful

jmweb 11-12-2008 10:32 PM

No porsche's or mercedez around, unless I buy em new or old (older then 03)

jmweb 11-12-2008 10:35 PM

Theres a X5 going through the dealer auction tomorrow....are the 04's more reliable then the 01's?

Weasel 11-12-2008 10:35 PM

Maybe consider the Volvo XC90, Audi Q7 and the Cadillacs as well, but none will drive as good as the X5 except maybe the Porshe, but you will always have problems with high end vehicles when they get older. Why not just get a newer, lower mileage X5? Or maybe try the new X6...:D

jmweb 11-12-2008 10:55 PM

Was reading infiniti suv's are just as fun to drive and more reliable....

jmweb 11-12-2008 10:56 PM

also, is there any vehicles which heat up really fast? I find the heated seats take too long to heat up!

They're also vulgar and unrefined. One doesn't feel like he/she is driving a luxury car in a Nis-- I mean Infiniti.

A 2004-2006 X5 would be the safest X5 bet. The X3 is more reliable especially after the first model year but before the facelift. Otherwise, if you want a reliable appliance, just drive an American SUV like an Acura MDX and throw any thoughts of passion out the window.

meandmyX 11-12-2008 11:08 PM

"just drive an American SUV like an Acura MDX", um if im not mistaken Acura is not by any means "American"

jmweb 11-12-2008 11:13 PM

Do 04 X5's have the same bolt pattern? If I get it from the auction, I won't get the tradein value and will have to sell my current x5, which will be tough. The closest BMW dealer offered me $10k-$12k for mine, i bought it was $19 last year!

Do 04 X5's have adaptive headlights?

I am really starting to consider the 5 series instead, do they have the same bolt pattern?

jmweb 11-12-2008 11:27 PM

I coulda bought a 06 X5 from the auction yesterday for 20k!

vinuneuro 11-12-2008 11:29 PM

All 04's will be out of warranty too. Sounds like an FX45 is right for you. They're a little duller, but almost as good in performance and more reliable.

jmweb 11-12-2008 11:32 PM

Do they have adaptive style headlights?

It gets cold up here in winter so I really need the heated seats!

Designed in America for the American market. They don't drive those monstrosities in Japan or Europe. Ditto for cars like the Acura TL and Toyota Avalon. My trademark saying: "The Acura TL is as Japanese as the California Roll"

I don't consider cars like the Pontiac G8 or Saturn Astra American. They're Australian and German, respectively.

There's a fuzzy line in terms of production date for the '04 X5, but most '04+ X5s have the Adaptive function for the bi-xenon headlamps included in NA models.

canamx5 11-12-2008 11:45 PM

I had a Cayenne for three years (1st gen.) before the E70 and NEVER had one problem with it.... it never did see the rugged winters that Canada will bring it though.
Performance/handling are close enough that it should not be too much of an adjustment, just be sure to opt for the air suspension and be prepared to be optioned to death at the Porsche stealership.

Good luck.

jmweb 11-12-2008 11:50 PM

I wish mitsihibishi made luxury vehicles! I love the look of the endraveour but they don't have heated seats yet!!!

I think the Mitsu Outlander is an outstanding small SUV, but it looks like you want something bigger.........

It is the best-lookin SUV in its class though, plus its got a split tailgate like the X5 and a 6-speed auto if you get the V6, and Bluetooth.

jmweb 11-13-2008 12:03 AM

But probably drives like crap compared to BMW?

Theres a black one in town I see every now and again and say damn I wish I had that suv. I betcha the other drivers saying the same thing about mine. hmmm....maybe he'll trade (if he/she gots heated/leather/sunroof).

I hate living in a small place and having no big names here...we got the normal stuff but not the more expensive things. Not even a mitsu dealer!

jmweb 11-13-2008 12:04 AM

oh, I like the outlander too, but its too low to the ground/not big enough/only has 2.4's.

mrkbbd 11-13-2008 01:17 AM

I really want to drive a FX 50 S, it's X6ish without an $86k price tag, so for 50k, on paper it looks like a bargain

jmweb 11-13-2008 09:13 AM

I found a 08 Mitsubishi Endeavor locally! It might be a bit of a drive but its fully loaded! heated leather seats, navigational system (I assume bluetooth kit)!

Weasel 11-13-2008 09:16 AM

Good luck and I hope you find what you want with it! (these X5's do spoil us with the driving experience)

jmweb 11-13-2008 09:48 AM

grrr, I love the bmw drive.

StatenX5 11-13-2008 10:44 AM

Rav4 V6 Sport, does not drive like a BMW but is fast reliable and cheap.

You can buy a new one for under $26,000. Almost any new car will give you 4 to 5 years trouble free.

I'm right there with you! My '02 X5 4.4i with 32,100 miles on it is in the shop...AGAIN! I drive 10 miles a day round trip and this POS vehicle can't stay out of the shop more than a month!

This time I'm looking at a $2200 bill for new left and right carrier and bearings (where the CV shafts go). Loud clunking and grinding sound was getting worse by the week. Mechanic told me it's the worst he's heard.

I'm going to start calling my ride "Willie Parker". You football fans will understand.
