NJ Speeding Ticket Blitz??
 

OK, I'll admit it, I have a heavy foot. :( Hence the speeding ticket this morning on the Turnpike, my 2nd in the past 4 months. Both times they did it using a "pace" technique in an unmarked vehicle, meaning my radar detector never even had a whiff of their presence.

I'm usually on track for about 1 ticket every 2 years, which I will swallow as the "price of doing business", so to speak. But the fact that I've gotten nailed for 2 in such a short span is either just bad luck...or possibly the fact that NJ (like many other states right now) is in a sea of red and needs to generate $$$$ fast and furious.

Just wanted to warn my fellow X5-ers that your Passport 9500ci or your Valentine V1 will NOT do you any good when they decide to simply "pace" you. And even looking out for the Ford Crown Vics with the black tints won't always help either. I'm always on the lookout for the un-marked ones. But the trooper this morning paced me from a parallel road (the truck lanes). He claimed he was going 70 mph and saw me pass him, and then crossed over to the car lanes to chase me down.:(
Not faulting him for doing his job though. If anything, he did me a favor by reducing it to a 70 in a 55 (instead of 86 in a 55). Now I just need to figure out whether to take the point hit on my license, or hire a lawyer to contest. I'm all out of plea bargains (did 2 in the last 3 years, on the 3rd one they won't let you plead it down to a no-point violation).

The NJ State Boys have been sporting unmarked white Chargers on 287. Be careful out there.

I normally go 9 over unless I have a point man, for now it might be a good idea to follow this practice, sorry for your bad luck.

yeah, i'm paranoid of my surroundings. The south Carolina police have yet to suprise me, they all have silver chargers or crown vics. Warning to vacationers, Maine loves random unmarked cars. Cherokees, mustangs, priuses... Oh my!

I was advised by an NYC officer-friend to keep it within 15mph in excess of limit. Even with radar/laser detector, I make it a point to do so unless it's very late or early with little to no traffic.

On way back from Philly a few weeks ago, was on 95 north and a blazer SS kept egging me on. Although I could have taken him, I backed off due to medium traffic...sure enough, when i got to the exit for Staten Island, there he was stopped by none other than a yellow taxi...squad car in disguise. They're common in NYC.

I would hire a lawyer to fight it.

The $1000 or so you might spend to fight the ticket will be less expensive, long term, than the increase you will likely pay with insurance. That goes double if you happen to have another incident like an accident or another ticket.

I know it sucks because, just because you hire a lawyer doesn't mean your going to win either. You might have to pay the ticket, get the points and pay the attorney.. But it's a chance I would take.

I dunno if any of y'all read my lil blurb in the Premier Section. VA doesn't even pace you. All they have to do is simply be driving by in the other direction, and then if you're a *hair* over the limit, they'll make a leisurely U-turn and come after you. I received 2 citations in 2 months in the same county, on the same road. And honestly, 67 in a rural 55 is just simply a budgeting issue.

I have seen Chargers too on 287 earlier this year. A gray one by exit 54-57.

When driving out of state (Miss) I was once hit by an unmarked car who was on the side the road with the hazards on and the hood open... sniping with the laser. And I had a radar detector, but with the laser once you hear the blip its already too late. And it was a freakin lumina!

It's been my 40+yrs of driving experience that "most" police won't bother you under +10mph - OVER +10mph, they can threaten to take your license, again, in most states, as I don't know all state laws - this gives them the leverage - chargers seem to be the popular unmarked car, though crown vics are still abundant - last yr I spotted in Maryland, 4 cycles, 3 Tijuana Taxis, 4 unmarked cars (dark blue, brown, & green), and 3 dark blue unmarked suburbans in ONE trip heading I-95S
