Has anybody tried this?

Take a portable dvd player and with a cable plug it into a car cd auxiliary port and have surround with car speakers?

You'll only get stereo sound,

What do you mean stereo sound? Will the movie play through the car speakers?

It will play, you just won't get true 5.1 surround sound.

x5s don't have 5.1 and that input is only stereo

just a standard 3/8" audio male-male cable
