Calling all Computer experts- need a hand
 

Anyone is more of an expert than I am, for sure.

My C drive is almost full, and I was looking for a way to clear some space on it. Anyone have a suggestion? I have already deleted some unused programs and moved files onto the D drive. Are there some files that might be 'hidden' somewhere that I can blow out to reclaim space?

Check your Temp folder under c:\Documents and Settings\"Your User"\local settings\Temp. You should be able to free up some space. Also check your temporary internet files.

within Internet Explorer go to " Tools>internet options and then click the button for "delete files" and then "delete all offline content"

as it's booting up, get to a command prompt and type "format c: /s"

Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools -> Disk Cleanup

then

Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools -> Disk Defragmenter

The cleanup works, but I don't currently have enough free space to defrag. I am cutting loose the temporary internet files as I write this.

I am assuming you use Windows XP as your operating system?

Well, I would clear up temp folder which usually contains all the temporary files used when installing applications, games, etc. That folder is located in C:/Documents and Settings/(Your Computer Name)/Local Settings/Temp. You would be surprised at how much space these temp files are taking up.

Clear the Temporary Internet Files folder if you like, but those files don't usually take up that much space anyway.

Go into your c:/Program Files folder and see if you have leftover folders from any applications you may have uninstalled, but were not deleted automatically by windows.

If you wanna really do the cleaning, go into regedit and delete all those useless registry strings. I don't recommend doing this though if you don't really know what you're doing. But if you wanna give it a try, do a Start - Run, and type in regedit. Go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER and go down SOFTWARE tree. Delete all the folders in there that contains old uninstalled applications. Then go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE and do the same.

Those are what I usually do anyways. Or I would just reformat my hard drive.

With all due respect, if he's asking how to clean up his hard disk i don't think it's a good idea to tell him to mess with the registry to regain disk space. IMHO.

How is it going to help you if you just delete the folders from the Windows Registry hives? It will give you nothing but troubles, believe me. The Windows Registry is just a big old file and even if you delete this whole registry file, you would probably save less than 50 MB at best.

What you should do is go into the Control Panel and uninstall the programs that you don't use anymore. Don't just go to the C: drive or D: drive and delete the folders. You want to uninstall them (by way of Control Panel > Add and Remove Programs and select program to uninstall).

burn all your porn on a dvd disk and delete from your computer once done. There you go..lots of free space.

It is Windows XP, I shoulda stated that from the get-go. I did find a few Program folders from deleted and moved programs, and that cleared a ton of space, as did cleaning the temp folder.
