iPhone on Verizon (PLEASE)
 

There are no words to explain the poor service from AT&T
in NorCal. And no I don't believe it's the iPhone because
the CEO is on the phone as we speak complaining about her phone.

You know that Apple went to Verizon first, before any other carrier & Verizon turned them down... right?

Apple's spiteful & they won't do an iPhone for Verizon for quite a while...

I mentioned it time and time again. If the iPhone was on Verizon, I would have switched in a heartbeat. I just don't see the point in having crappy service with AT&T. I know it works well in some areas, but not where I travel. For now, I am stuck with my reliable BlackBerry.

As for not going to Verizon, Apple is still a business. Why can't they provide phones to both companies (like BlackBerry). With the purchase of Alltel, Verizon will be the largest cell phone company in the US.

There have been some thread about this on howard forums and it appears some of it has to do with the Iphone hardware and how 3G was implemented. I don't know all the technical details because I will never own an Iphone. By contrast, I live on the East Coast and have AT&T without a problem.

I can't speak to your particular area, but I can say that AT&T Wireless service in Detroit is rock solid - much better than any other provider, including Verizon.

As for having an iPhone work in the Verizon network, you'll have to wait at least 3 and a half more years at the earliest, since Apple signed a 5 year exclusive with AT&T in the US when the iPhone was launched in July of 2007. That and the fact that the iPhone is a GSM based handset (worldwide) and Verizon uses CDMA in its network means that you'll need to find another phone to meet your needs if you are with Verizon.

My understanding is that there were hardware issues if the iPhone were to be paired with Verizon, GSM versus CDMA as previously mentioned. I heard somewhere that Verizon tends to be more restrictive in terms of its software applications.

I know about the GSM CDMA thing and the contract with AT&T.
The iPhone does makes up for some of this stuff by virtue of it's
usefulness. But honestly i could do without GSM, at least where
I'm located.

If it continues to get on my nerves i just might resurrect my palm.

Well, I know I haven't been posting because being at CES, but the new Palm Pre phone looks awesome for those who have been addicted to the "zen" of Palm. It will be available on Sprint CDMA network which is probably better than AT&T. All my friends with iPhones biggest complaint is the cell phone service with their iPhone (original & 3G) is the cellphone reception in our area. Sprint appears to be better.

The Palm PRE won the CNET's Best in CES.

I'm not questioning your experience, Jeff. However, I checked the recent CR report for Detroit and attached it here.

VZW is above AT&T in all twenty-three of the markets surveyed. There are only two where they are second and those two are to Alltell which is now part of VZW.
