Toyota is taking a beating, this was from January:

Over at Toyota Division, the situation wasn't much better. Judging by the drop in Prius sales, saving the world was deemed 31.4% less important in January. Toyota's gasoline-powered economy cars didn't do much better as the Yaris plummeted over 44% while the Camry was down nearly 37%. The one bright spot? Corolla sales "only" dropped 10.8%. The trucks and SUVs took a similar beating, down 40% overall.

Lexus fared no better. Its cars were down 37.7%. The SUVs dropped 21.2% helped in part by strong sales of the RX which only slipped 7.2%.

So let me get this straight you actually believe that union overhead and Gazillion-dollar Health Pension Plan to maintain is they only problem
these auto makers have?

Neh, culmination of events. Poor market selection, poor pricing, extended legacy costs, crap market, and no lending = EPIC FAIL.

I would love to know the total dollars Chrysler has received considering Canada has been shoveling money on them just like the US.

Today's contribution was $2 billion, to go alongside the $8 billion the US government put in. For that, they got a guarantee of 20% of production continuing in Canada, or Chryslder is in default. Not sure what the penalty is if they default, maybe they have to go stand in the corner.

Heard today that it will take 3 years to get the Fiat models certified and set up as another line for Chrysler in North America.

A couple of points here.

For years, the Ford F-150 has been touted as America's best selling pickup truck, but in reality, Chevy Silverado and GM Sierra which share the same platform and as a combined entity, has been outselling the F-150 for as far back as I could pull total sales reports.

Those of you who say they would never own an out of warranty BMW is doing the brand a disservice. There are plenty of high mileage BMW's on the road, well beyond warranty expiration, but also not costing owners an arm and a leg to own and operate. Sure, there are BMW's, recently introduced over the past decade, that had some notorious issues, especially first year models ('02 745i, '04 645i, etc.), or models with first year features (i.e. adaptive handling, SMGIII), but there are a ton of BMW's on the road that will probably go up to 200K miles without any catastrophic issues.

In my opinion, most BMW's are still excellent vehicles beyond their warranty period, in particular, those vehicles who have received the strictest of care and maintenance by their owners.

There are plenty of 100K mile and beyond X5's on this board. There are also plenty of E39 M5's and E46 M3's on the road, also beyond the 100K range, and it's because they were well maintained.

But I suppose if there were enough people complaining about BMW's high cost of repairs, unreliability, and various other sundry problems, perhaps it will drop the resale value of a well-maintained '04-'06 M3 ZCP coupe down to where I can just pay cash for it.

So go ahead and keep belly-aching.

asawadude - personal experiences with all the Bimmers I've owned, I'd have to kindly disagree. And comparing one truck to a mock-up of two, not exactly even. Doesn't matter that they share the same DNA, they are two different brands. The Expedition use to ride on a F150 frame, should that be included as well ;) And wasn't this the same stuff said about American cars?

I am one of those who have said they won't own an out of warranty BMW, but to clarify, I am referring to my need for a reliable daily driver, and the current crop of overcomplicated models. My 535, while I love driving it, is an example. Far too many things to go wrong IMO. We did own a 325xi E46 out of warranty, and that didn't worry me at all. It was easy to maintain an E46. One reason we chose our current X3 is that I expect it to be less trouble over time than the X5, due to the E46 platform. Time will tell if we keep it past the four year warranty period or not.

I actually agree with you on the M Coupe, but make mine a 2001-2002 with the S54 engine. I just like them, and it would be a neat car to hang on to. Apparently only 690 were brought into North America, so it may be hard to find a good one.
