Congrats! Sounds like you are into it for sure.

If I may ask, what percentage of the cars total cost did the mods set you back? Lorinser and Brabus can't be cheap.

vinuneuro 05-08-2009 10:45 PM

Congrat. Next up LS1 swap?

RMak 05-09-2009 07:28 AM

That is awesome!! Your smart car looks terrific! Funny thing... my co-worker and I (who also owns an X5) always talk about modding a smart car. I would bet putting a turbo in a smart car will give alot of supercars a run for their money.

Yeah because it would be a great idea to take a car like that at high speed

Look at the proportions and aerodynamics of that vehicle, there is more than one reason it isn't given high power numbers.

Wheelbase 73.5 inches
Track width front/rear 50.51 inches/54.53 inches
Length 106.1 inches
Width 61.38 inches
Height 60.71 inches

----

X5 for example in contrast:

Wheelbase 115 inches
Length 191 inches
Height 69 inches
Width 76 inches

The smart car is a driving brick.

Smart cars are limited to 90mph for a reason  It would be an out of control death trap in triple digits without substantial suspension modification, just look at the height of the vehicle as opposed to is wheelbase and size.

C'mon... lower it, throw on a widebody kit... You never know. Plus we are in the US... getting to 90mph is all you need. :D

Plus here in NY, we have retards that race at the stoplight up to 40mph before they hit another traffic light. :p::rofl::confused::dunno::cool:

NOVAX5 05-09-2009 10:12 AM

Wow, if you have time and money to mod a Smart Car. I think you would do a lot better modding other cars of yours. Congrats. No one ever says Smart car is a sport car or a performance car, why the heck did someone compare Smart with the X5? You still decorate your house even you know its a 1,500 sf rambler which can't withstand the storm like most of the bigger and newer houses can right?

jst2878 05-09-2009 10:45 AM

When are you going to do the mod that allows you to attach 2 golf bags to the back?

Weasel 05-10-2009 02:44 AM

You need an exoskeleton roll cage on that thing like the rock crawler jeeps, but then you would need that 'busa motor to move her.

I agree. Lets hope none of us are hit by a semi.

You have to remember that those crash test results were into a solid barrier. In real world crashes where the Smart is typically outweighed by just about everything on the road with 4 wheels it does not rate so well.

Here is an example of the IIHS crashing a Smart and an MB C class;

Mercedes C class versus Smart Fortwo: After striking the front of the C class, the Smart went airborne and turned around 450 degrees. This contributed to excessive movement of the dummy during rebound — a dramatic indication of the Smart's poor performance but not the only one. There was extensive intrusion into the space around the dummy from head to feet. The instrument panel moved up and toward the dummy. The steering wheel was displaced upward. Multiple measures of injury likelihood, including those on the dummy's head, were poor, as were measures on both legs.
"The Smart is the smallest car we tested, so it's not surprising that its performance looked worse than the Fit's. Still both fall into the poor category, and it's hard to distinguish between poor and poorer," Lund says. "In both the Smart and Fit, occupants would be subject to high injury risk in crashes with heavier cars." In contrast, the C class held up well, with little to no intrusion into the occupant compartment. Nearly all measures of injury likelihood were in the good range.

Here is the whole article on micro car safety.

IIHS news release

ravenheart 05-11-2009 10:35 AM

Wow - talk about a 'glass-half-empty' crowd ... someone does some cool mods on a very cool car, and all you people can get out of that is rant about the safety? Just because we all drive a momsy girls-car of an SUV doesnt mean we have to behave like it.

Anyways - keep up the good work, poleposition :) I wish I had the talent and money to do a car like that :)

StanF18 05-11-2009 10:47 AM

PolePosition,

I see in your sig that you have an E70 4.8, so you're obviously a well-rounded driver and not "married" to the Smart car cult!
Just wanted to point that out for the benefit of the other readers who our out to crucify the Smart.

The important thing is that you're having fun with your modding, and I think it looks very clean and tasteful. No ghetto or "ricer" feel to these mods, very nicely done.

As for safety, it's a "relative" concept, and everyone has a different threshold for what is safe. I, personally, would not "feel" safe in the Smart nor would I want my loved ones driving in it. It would simply come out on the losing end to 90% of the vehicles on American roads. But if one is goint to preach about safety, then motorcycles are a more obvious problem. I'd rather be enveloped in the Smart's safety cage (however small it may be) than have no safety cage at all. A helmet and leather jacket aren't going to pass an IIHS frontal offset test!

motordavid 05-11-2009 11:09 AM

poleposition,
Pretty well done, imo...looks pretty titz for a midgey car.

I rolled by one the other day on I-40, (I was riding my
GoldWing), and I think my GW is longer, :D.

Considerable dough spent, I would bet, but everyone
has their own bag.

alewifebp 05-11-2009 10:44 PM

I find the Smart cars to be kind of "cute" if you will, and given your stated purpose, a Smart makes some sense. And I never really knew that there would be such a wide variety of mods available, and I do commend you on a great job!

Still, if I were to need a small runabout car, I'd most certainly get a Honda Fit. About the same price, usable back seat and storage. If places like train stations and the like started to offer parking specifically made for micro cars like the Smart, and with lower parking fees since you are only taking up half a spot, the Smart car value proposition increases greatly.

I don't think your smart pisses anyone off. I just don't think they appeal widely to the American audience.

I think the car looks great and is very tastefully done.

However, I would never have done that to a smart car, especially one just going to a from a train station. Tint and debadging, sure, but everything I would have been left alone. IMO.

In the city those smart cares are great, outside of the city, make sure you have good medical and/or your will up to date.

1) I don't buy used.

2) You may have missed this in this thread, but this car is only used to take him to and from the train station, which is 1.5 miles from his house. Essentially, it's his "train station car". He also owns a 550 and a X5 4.8. That said, owning this Smart purely for this sole purpose makes sense. It's economical and allows him to mod the car to his liking without breaking the bank. Paying $13K for a new car, as opposed to a used car, with the same purpose in mind makes sense to me, but then again, what do I know...

I get why the Smart meets the OP's needs. That wasn't my point. I just found it funny that you would be so quick to dismiss a Cooper S just because it was pre-owned. Just thought it was funny. You're whole comment about "pre-owned? Ah, no thanks", made me laugh. That's all.

Easier said than done. With a suit and tie on each day, this doesn't make sense for my commute. Not sure about his... However, I know with the heat and humidity to the cold, wet, icy weather we experience in Long Island throughout the year, I would not want to walk or bike that route to the train station each day. 1.5 miles might not seem like a far hike, but at the crack of dawn and/or late at night, it's not ideal.

But hey, I never considered roller skating to the train station!

Hey Poleposition - Go buy yourself some roller skates with orange wheels and ditch that Smart!:bustingup:bustingup

Poleposition:

Many on here are fixated on SUVs and vehicles that size, so it is somewhat predictable that some would diss the Smart. Personally, I think it is a very logical vehicle for 2 km to a train station. I get everything except the spikes on the bumper.

I see posts on this board about blacking out head and tail lights, and tinting windows forward of the B pillar, so I have some trouble taking negative safety comments about a Smart seriously.

I completely understand your comments on the 328. I drove a Morgan when I lived in the UK. No way was it a safe vehicle, compared with my Passat or Focus. However, I didn't lose sleep over it, I enjoyed it for what it was.

True motorheads are not fixated on a brand or model, they simply like cars of all shapes and sizes.

Like I said before, I get it, but then again, I don't. For the simple purpose you stated, it makes a lot of sense on the outset. And certainly if the train station had special minicar parking that was closer to the platform, it would be an even better proposition. However, my only points are two. First, as I said earlier, I would have purchased a Honda Fit instead (IMHO). About the same price and more usable space, and it is still a fun car to drive. However, in this very limited view for what you are using the car for, a used Honda Civic would have certainly made more financial sense, and would certainly last a long time, and is modable if you so desire.

However, I also said that the mods were very tastefully done, and even though I don't mod my cars all that much, I "get" how you have the modding bug, which is perfectly fine.

I don't have a clue how many members are vocal or participants.
But I do believe there are enough people involved that can
offer differing opinions rather than the one sided impression
poleposition or anyone for that matter believe exist on this site.
