Garage Door Help Needed

Greetings,

We're doing some work to our house and it involves redoing our garage with a bedroom for my mom above one of the bays. Obviously garage doors are noisy and cause vibration. I want to minimize things to the greatest extent possible. I know about using rubber washers when hanging the opener. I have also been told that hanging the door from a piece of steel that is hung from the roof of the garage will also help to limit vibration and noise.

Does anyone else here have any suggestions or experience with this issue, or with either of these specific solutions? In fact, we will have 2 bedrooms above the garage, but I am most worried about mom's room.

Has anyone tried the new type of door openers that do not use springs?

One more garage question (this has been covered from time to time over the years, I know. What should I do with the floor, and where should I get some bang-for-the-buck cabinets? Any experiences would be greatly appreciated!! :D

Have you considered ceiling storage racks? These things are a great use of unused space...

My garage doors shake the whole house..
Doesn't bother me though, lets me know when the wife is coming in the door.

Gives me time to close my browser.. lol..
(just kidding..)

I would use a side mount opener. I have them in my new house and you can barely hear them, very very quiet.

I changed out our original cheapo garage doors for insulated, "hurricane rated" doors. The additional weight really quietened the open-close cycle to the point I cannot hear the doors go up, and barely hear them go down.

This sometimes results in surprise when spousal unit enters living room from basement. You can always turn the monitor off quickly!

By the way, if you live in high wind area like hurricane country the garage doors actually bow outward until the counterclockwise winds pass to the north and start to come at you from the west.

Thanks for the feedback.

I have heard these are very difficult to install and that's why you can no longer buy them at Lowe's or Home Depot. Is that true?

Check out the "screw drive" type garage openers. they are very quiet and it won't shake your house. They are easy to install too.

I meant to post that our replacement garage door openers have the central spring horizontally over each door.

I think that give more even force - lifting especially.

I used to have chain-type openers that definitely shook the house. I replaced them with the screw-type, and am very pleased with them. Quiet, faster, and simple to install myself.
