Mystery solved. My mom called the DNR and sent them the pictures. They are juvenile black rat snakes and are not venomous.

I live on my dad's farm, but my mom and her husband do not live on a farm or even in the country. They are in the 'burbs. I love snakes...but everyone else in my family is terrified of them.

They were told by a neighbor that poisonous snakes had been found in the area, so that's why they have been killing them. But the guy at the DNR informed her that it is illegal to kill snakes in Maryland :eeps:

The found a much larger snake with a big belly in one of their birdhouses tonight. :yikes:

Naw, being a rat snake it probably ate a Weasel that was after the birds.

How many of you are comfortable with snakes?
Along with spiders I can appreciate where they fit in
to the scheme of things but they're still creepy........:wow:

I know some people who can't even look at pictures of snakes.

Spiders scare me more than snakes. It's harder to tell if they're dangerous / venomous or not. Most poisonous snakes have diamond-shaped head.

It's been years, but I had pet tarantulas as well. (just rose haired though)

The fun thing is when they molt the molting looks exactly like the spider, so you can really prank people good! (I must have been a bad kid huh?)

I'm with you. Spiders creep me out. I think it stems from a childhood incident when I was rough-housing with a buddy on the lawn and we tumbled up against a bush and a big spider fell out of the bush into my mouth.

I have no problem with snakes though, big or small. When I was in Thailand I had a 15 ft python draped on me for a photo.

A weasel would win a fight against a rat snake every time... weasels eat snakes! It would take a venomous snake or pretty big constrictor to make a weasel shy away. ;)
