Walter Cronkite, Off to Valhalla...
I grew up, in high school, watching Uncle Walter...to many he may seem
like he was from ancient history, but he was "The TV News" back in the '60s and '70s, and early '80s, imo. He had enormous but subtle influence on many of the events he reported on. He seemed to be in it for the practice of journalism as opposed to the dough or the bully pulpit. This was pre-cable news, pre-news bits on the web, pre-screaming 24/7... A good run to 92, but they don't make them like him anymore, imo. RIP. http://www.nytimes.com/2009/07/18/us...pagewanted=all |
When the news was believable...

Probably the last respectable newsman we had in America. May he rest in peace.

Quote:
(with the exception of Brokaw and Scarborough) |
One of the last of the "Edward R. Murrow school of broadcasters" that revolutionized American television journalism after World War II. The only one left is Daniel Schorr..."And that's the way it is". - Walter Cronkite signing off.
Two of his most memorable moments (to me): |
In my parents house, the CBS Evening News with Cronkite was the preferred news service along with George Putnum for the local news; for some reason, my mother had a disdain for Huntley and Brinkley, always citing their Democratic slant as the reason.
When I left for college, watching the CBS evening news remained a habit for another decade until Cronkite retired. I always watched Cronkite's reports on the Vietnam conflict with keen interest, especially after I become eligible for the military draft. I remember the body count graphics vividly - today, year to date, total. Cronkite was the voice of reason for America in a time of turbulence through the 60's and 70's. With the passing of Cronkite and his peers, the dignity and assurance that characterized the evening news is a lost art. |
A great example of a true American.
We trusted him he trusted us and CBS, now its everyone for the quick buck and no loyalty or tenure. |
