Nearly half of new vehicles purchased under the program were from the Big Three. The Big Three’s share in this program (45%) is equivalent to their overall share in the auto market (about 45%). Four of the top ten selling vehicles are manufactured by the Big Three. Of non-Big Three purchases, preliminary analysis suggests that well over half of these new vehicles were manufactured in the United States.

Thus far, 83% of trade-ins under the program are trucks, and 59% of new vehicle purchases are cars. The program is working far better than anyone anticipated at moving consumers out of old, dirty trucks and SUVs and into new more fuel-efficient cars.

Cars purchased under the program are, on average, 21% above the average fuel economy of all new cars currently available, and 63% above the average fuel economy of cars that were traded in. This means the program is raising the average fuel economy of the fleet, while getting the dirtiest and most polluting vehicles off the road.

Good stuff. Glad to see the program has been a success, and especially glad to see that the Big Three are benefitting from it so much. :thumbup:

GM needed a bailout, Ford didn't. GM needed Bankruptcy, Ford didn't, Ford posted a 2% profit, GM didn't :)

And driving a Pontiac rental car I can see why GM is bankrupt. The Vibe I'm driving has less than 1000 miles on it and already has transmission problems, spotty fit and finish and cheap paint. I miss my Jetta...

I'm actually happy that GM restructured, if GM fails, the economy is going to get even worse, not to mention the Corvette would be in jeapordy, which is after all, all we care about right? :)

Chevrolet and Cadillac should stay IMO, the rest can go.

Cadillac is the premium brand
Chevy/GMC gets the trucks

The problem is going to be that Buick is HUGE in Asia.

at least not ALL of the money went to Korea, and most of the cars are at the minimum domestically assembled.

As per CNBC:

Auto sales up 2.4%.
Retail sales down 8.4%

The consumer is now leveraged for future months as they have a car payment and higher insurance premium that they didn't have before.

Buick IS huge in Asia, when I was in China there were NICE looking buicks, not like the crappy looking ones around here. Also, when I was in Europe, I saw some really eye catching Fords, that was over a year ago, still only ugly Fords here in the states, anyone know why?

Not surprised about the retail sales and, don't disagree that the CfC deal had some effect. This retail thing,
a huge part of GDP, is not coming back next week or, next month, or maybe even next Qtr.

Other than groceries, some school stuff for the kiddoes, and a few other normal replacement things, what the
hell "new" does someone need right now? A Slightly Saving/Scared Population, as opposed to the "buy it on CCs
and worry about it later" mode, is impacting retail sales, but the econ can't have it both ways, currently.

A couple of thoughts:

In Europe, the Fords and Opels and Vauxhalls are a lot smaller than their US cousins and the Big 3 don't think that they'll sell. In Europe, annual registrations are tied to the size of the engine, so the smaller the engine the lower the registration cost. A lot of Americans equate bigger cars with being safer, so the smaller Euro cars probably wouldn't sell. (With the exception of the hot rod 4banger turbos, but I don't know why those don't come over)

The safety and emissions regs in China are far less stringent than the US, and I think that limits bringing the exterior designs to the US, but that's just a guess.

lol at 4 banger turbos.. good info and probably very true. I was looking at the A3, and I'm sure i suffer from the common misconception here in the states, but it just seemed like i would be crushed (if the bigger cars could catch me ;) that is).

I hope none of you went online to "cars.org" to find out any of this info. because if you accepted their term & security disclaimer, everything..., let me say that again, EVERYTHING on your computer, including the computer itself, BECOMES PART OF THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT. All your info can be monitored, copied, audited and sent to DoT, CARS, investigative agencies (domestic AND foreign)

I did go to cars.org. It was kind of strange that the FBI visited me earlier today. I had a great time with them, very nice guys. Although, the polygraph test was a little much. I guess they were a little eccentric. :scared:

OK, it sems to have been directed at dealers, not consumers. BUT STILL, it was telling dealers then, that whatever they knew about their customers was now subject to Federal Govt review and seizure. So all those customers participating in the program, all their info they had to submit is now owned by the Govt

now you might say the IRS already knows this. But the IRS is prevented by law from passing on that info. "Poorly written"? That statement clearly spells out what they want to do with everything the dealers have on file.

oh, and dealers are bailing out of the program because they are not getting paid
