mD, I don't much about this stuff either, just learn a little bit more everytime I need to make a purchase. :) The Toshiba drives are pretty reliable afaik and that works well for storage. I need one as a primary drive though so performance is high priority. Western Digital and Seagate tend to be the best, but Seagate seems to be having quality quirks.

If you have important stuff stored on those flash and hard drives, it would be a very very good idea to back all of it up on another hard drive. You never know when something doesn't feel like doing it's job anymore no matter how overall reliable.

I am trying to avoid the back-up for the back-up, to The Back-Up, if you get my drift, ;).

I have basically mirror image data of all my important/interesting/good stuff on a desk top here in NC,
a desk top in FL, and on our lap top. And, the flash drives allow "movement", and the lil'Toshiba portable keeps a load of docs, photos, info, too.
I have avoided the big external hard drive for each of our 3 computers, thus far. I'm "backed-up" and not sure how much more I need to be backed-up.

If I can't rescue docs&photos from one of my several sources, it's probably the end of the world anyway and I won't care.
The Kidz have the "keys" to the financials, and that's what they really care about. :rofl:

The only hard drives (4) I had ever die are WD ---> I would stay away from them!!
When they start clicking you know you are in trouble!!

look at carbonite.com for your backup. I have about 75 Gigs of data stored there in case I lose my drive. It is silly to store everything at one place (multiple drives with data) and have the place burnt down, losing your data. The service is not expensive and works great.

I've been skeptical of Western Digital for a while, but Seagate has had some bad runs recently. And there is a reason why the term Hitachi Death Star means something :cool:

I switched to a Seagate on my laptop, and it was quieter than the original equipment Fujitsu, but it does have the annoying click, click, click that seems to be common with this model. However, it is FAST.

I'm looking to get a new hard drive in my desktop for some more space and improved speed, and Seagate will be on the top of my list.
