Goog-zilla

Good article on how Google operates, and a teaser to a CNBC documentary on Google tomorrow night at 9 on CNBC.

Excerpt:

For example, did you know that no, you do not own your own Google searches?
Google keeps every single search query forever. That's forever as in until the end of time.

In fact, Google, it turns out, keeps every single search query forever. That's forever as in until the end of time. Or, at least, until the end of Google, which, if it keeps going at the current $4-billion-a-year profit, will outlast time. That is unless somehow pieces get sold off, and then whoever buys it gets all of your/mine/our information. Forever.
In fact, according to the Electronic Freedom Foundation, when we Google search, we "trade our privacy for these services."
In response, Google CEO Eric Schmidt says, "If you have something you don't want anyone to know, maybe you shouldn't be doing it." Big Mother is watching you.

With friends like that... ;)

It's not surprising that they're storing every search, the bigger question is how or if they're tying that search string back to Joe User.

Found this in their privacy statement:

Why are logs kept before being anonymized?

We strike a reasonable balance between the competing pressures we face, such as the privacy of our users, the security of our systems and the need for innovation. We believe anonymizing IP addresses after 9 months and cookies after 18 months strikes the right balance.

So they tie your search to your ip address and keep it for 9 months, and they keep cookie data for 18 months.
