Copying an OutlookExpress Folder Question
 

I use Gmail, but have an Outlook Express Folder that is very important to me, and need to transfer that single folder full of emails,
to a thumb drive...take it with me, and transfer it onto another computer.

I used the steps found on the web to copy that single folder into a new saved folder that contains the correct amount of data, of that OE folder.

When I try to open that copied folder to make sure all the emails are in there and readable, I get:

Windows can't open file, blah blah,
Select program or
Find on Web

I can't find any appropriate program to use to open it with.
It is a DBX File, 1.19 MB in size and contains ~ 25 emails, both from and to...

Any tips/help would be appreciated.

I know how to toss that folder onto a thumb and load it back on another computer; I simply want to be able to open that saved folder,
make sure it has the info I need, etc.

you can only open it with outlook express so if you don't have OE on the target machine, or Outlook, you're going to have a problem.

If you have OE on the target machine, just run OE and then:
File>Open>OE Data file

and you should be good to go.

I do have OE on this original 'puter and, OE on the target 'puter...
What I don't get is I can't open that recently saved folder to make
sure the stuff I want is in there...

to buy a download via that link.

QwikAg: I read that, used it, but it doesn't say how one can
look in the copied OE folder to make sure the copied info is "there".

Beyond me how to actually download the stuff on that link,
or make it work.

I did as you instructed, but all I get is my existing list of OE folders...I can't "find"/locate the folder I made/saved to pull it in to that program via the lil'
window options they give me. Low tech, retired bum here...

I have/can find that folder, but not pulling it up via the choices in that program.

Ok, now that I'm home, I can use pictures to show how it works.

1st picture: run the program, click on "File", then "Open", then you will see the "Open Wizard" window. Click on little yellow folder (circled in red).
2nd picture: once you've clicked on that yellow folder, the file browser will open (it may look differently than on my picture because I have Windows 7). Browse to your .dbx file - mine (inbox.dbx, which contains e-mails from inbox folder in OE) is located in my "Documents" folder, as you can see it on picture, yours is probably somewhere else. If you found it - click on it then click on "open" button. This will get you to next step, which is on 3rd picture.
3rd picture: when you'll see that screen, just click on "OK" button, that will open your .dbx file and will list all the e-mails (which you can read individually), which you can see on 4th picture. That's how it works ;)

Another way is when you double-click on your .dbx file and Windows will ask which program do you want to open this file with - point the Windows to this program (to MailView.exe).

why not import the data to Outlook? Then you can backup/export and all the other good stuff with a Outlook .pst file

It fookin worked!

Took a few tries and some digging, (I had the OE folder I wanted to save,
saved in some weird spot as opposed to straight Docs), but it works, it
is on my thumb drive and I appreciate your yeoman's effort, very much.
