Gran Turismo 5 official release date
|
|
Oh yeah baby! After so many YEARS we've all been waiting for this!
I hope this doesn't get pushed back AGAIN like the early Nov ship date. :stickpoke |
Already told the wife this is the most important gift that I want this Christmas and she better get on it early. Now I need to find a good steering wheel setup. :driver:

Amazon.com: Logitech PlayStation 3 Driving Force GT Racing Wheel: Video Games Be thankful this is on PS3, the only wheels available for the Xbox right now are Fanatec's and they're very expensive. |
I bought the logitech G25 racing wheel two years ago expecting GT5 to be released soon. Here I am two years later and Logitech now has the G27 and still no GT5:D
here is the G27:Amazon.com: Logitech G27 Racing Wheel: Electronics But I must say that I have never had so much fun racing on my PlayStation (I've been using GT5 prologue) The force feedback is very strong (You can't casually race a high HP car with one hand) but what I find the most incredible is the way they are able to transmit the feeling of the tires losing traction (understeer and oversteer!) With a large enough screen and surround sound, it can get very realistic. My only complaint is that in a straight line most cars give the wheel a strange "loose" feel and you are constantly compensating both ways to keep it straight. Oh! and the gates in the stick shifter are not realistic, But you have the option of SMG or wheel paddles to change gears realistically. Anybody with a PS3 that likes racing simulators will really enjoy this. If like me, the only experience you have with racing wheels was playing video games in arcades in the 90's... you will be blown away! |

if u really want a good racing game try rFactor...or better yet rFactor 2 is coming out. PC only...as real as it gets ;)
|
Thanks for the wheel advice. Now comes the decision of going basic or stepping up to a G25/27. I am thinking the basic model would still be fun seeing as it appears to have the same feedback as the higher-end models and is much less expensive.

The Logitech Driving Force Pro/GT or the G25/27 are all great steering wheels to use for such games. I have a Driving Force Pro and G25 and can't really complain about them. The DFP could use better pedals, or even a clutch but it is a great entry level wheel. The G25 is amazing for the price but could use a bigger steering wheel (to mimic the real thing) and a shifter with more resistance. Mounting the pedals inversely would also aid in a real life feeling.
I personally play Live For Speed S2 on the PC with a G25 and have been playing for 3+ years. I really do want to try out GT5, but that requires a PS3 which I don't have. |
Sounds like the Driving Force GT is what I will end up asking for. I will probably also construct some sort of frame to mount the wheels and pedals. Unfortunately, my TV is mounted over my fireplace, so I will be looking up a bit at the screen. I wish I had a lower TV that I could scoot right up to for a more realistic experience.
|
Well, got GT5 and the Driving Force GT. Absolutely loving it. I can't even imagine playing this without the wheel and pedal set anymore. I have so much more control now. It makes you better at the game instantly. Thanks for the recommendation, Thunder.
|
I wish I had a wheel setup... regular controller just isn't that great for it. Yet I have many many more important things to spend money on first.

I won't get GT5 for another month or two.
Can anybody here compare it to GT Prologue? Did they change anything or just expand on what was offered in GT Prologue? |

That's what I was hoping to hear. Any opinion on the AI? That was my only complaint about Prologue. If the AI opponent bumps my car, I get penalized!? WTF? :D |

Quote:
Also, what do you guys mean about being penalized when the AI opponent bumps your car? |
Quote:
Actually, you just bought a new house and are doing a lot of work around there, so do NOT get the wheel set. I repeat, do NOT get the wheel set. You won't get anything done for the next few months if you do. |

In GT5 Prologue and in the full release, if you're in a race (and it's mostly relevant in online racing) if you bump someone hard or cut a corner severely, giving yourself an advantage, the AI will slow you down for a few seconds as a penalty. It's a deterrent to cheating and online races turning into bumper cars. |

It is also relevant (penalties) in the game if you are trying to complete levels and clear races. Like thunder says, the penalties are there to keep you from cutting corners to gain time, or bumping into rails or other cars to clear turns at high speeds, again to gain time. It also prevents you from running opponents off the track instead of properly overtaking them. Where the artificial intelligence (AI) failed in GT Prologue, was that it penalized unfairly, consistently. For example, if I'm behind an AI controlled car, coming up to a hard right hand turn, and try to pass by braking late and overtaking to the right towards the inside of the turn. The computer controlled car will follow it's preprogramed line and drive right into me at the apex. But I get penalized and can't accelerate for 5 seconds. The same thing will happen in straights. While passing multiple cars in a row, if one of those cars decides to swing out and hits you, you get a 5 sec penalty. But if, while racing, you see a car in front of you lose control and run off the track, or bump another; they (AI) will not be penalized! In the end it was just a very annoying glitch that proved to be very frustrating when trying to clear certain races. From what I read online, Polyphony Digital has tried to address the issue in GT5, but at the time nobody that wrote reviews had gotten far enough into the game to really test it properly. |
Well, one thing I am really disappointed about is that there is no e30 M3 in GT5. Kind of sucks that there are really only 18 BMW's in general. That sounds like a lot, but considering there are more types of Mazda Miatas than BMW's total, it seems pretty weak. I understand the cars in this game are heavily influenced by it's Japanese creator, but damn the list of Mazda's, Honda's, Mitsubishi's, etc. is very extensive compared to cars from other parts of the world. To add insult to injury there are more Lexus vehicles than BMW's as well. Hell, they included the Honda Element and Odyssey but not an e30 M3! I mean really? In a racing game? How was the most successful touring car of all time omitted from this game? They included the Mercedes Benz 190 E touring car, so why no e30?
|
I hear ya.... I think they should and could have had many more BMW's in there. I do think it is funny that I was able to set up a 135i to be faster and better handling than the E93 M3 and E60 M5 fully set up. I won gold in the supercar challenge races in the 135i too, it was fun passing pagani zonda's ZR1 racing vettes, saleen S7's etc. in a freakin 1 series!
I still need to get a steering wheel setup... |

I wonder if there is any way for them to add new cars to the game through updates or the used car/online lots? |
Possibly so, I'm mad I missed the chance to buy an SVT lightning F150 in the used lot as it was the first truck I saw on there and I missed it!

On a side note, I love the Seasonal Events. There is a ton of money to be made in the Bonus Races where you need to come from behind. |
I haven't been playing much lately, I need to play some more an check out some seasonal races I guess as I haven't done any yet...

So what's the verdict on GT5? I absolutely loved GT1 through to GT4 but I haven't forked out for GT5 as yet given I also need to buy a PS3. Worth the money? GT5 only been available here in Oz for a short while.
|
It is very reminiscent of GT4 a-spec, just newer cars, some new tracks, more special races/vehicles, online racing/play etc. It's like an old friend with new toys really.
|
Thanks Weasel. Are the races still limited to six cars - yours and the five AI cars?

Some of the things that bug me are that there are way too many Japanese models compared to others, the sound of the other cars engines sometimes overwhelms your engine so it can be hard to shift based on engine noise, no brake upgrades, transmission adjustments are simplified to only changing top speed of the vehicle (no individual gear options), some graphic glitches, playing online can be confusing, etc. I know there are 12 cars in most races in GT mode. I don't play online or in arcade mode very much, so I am not exactly sure about them. |

Okay .. this is one of the reasons I haven't been on the forums for awhile now.
Also, been trading cars. Just about have all of them now. :D |

Oh, definitely! Could never live up to the hype. I mean after so many YEARS of hype what game could!
The game designer even admitted he went overboard and said some things (I think too much graphics detail? can't remember) should have been saved for GT6. Something about the hardware was being pushed to the limit already. Yes, there are imperfections but I don't need perfection. If you're a GT fan you just want the damn game to play. That's what I didn't like - the 6 year delay. GT6 will be out sooner than that but I don't think we can expect too much of a leap from GT5 if the designer is already saying its close to being maxed now. Just enjoy the game and have fun! |
Any one want there ass kicking on gt5 add me wilkoturbo

Saw this is in Costco coupon book which came this week. Any good?

Just read the reviews in that link, they both gave pretty low ratings due to lack of force feedback... I went on two different occasions to attempt buying the logitech wheel setup locally, two different stores at that... both sold out earlier in the day. I may just have to give up and order the damn thing online as apparently they don't keep enough in stock at the stores.

Weasel - Just check your local gamestops. All 4 of the stores by me have them in stock.

I've just love to find any wheel/pedal set-up that works well. Not that I've tried anything with GT5. But I've tried a number of different ones with GT1-4 thanks to a mate who edits a gaming magazine and none have been satisfactory for me.
|
that thrustmaster above is no good, but i heard this one is bad a$$. that's a lot of benjamins for it though. i don't think i could ever spend that much money on a wheel.

Yes LeMans, that's the one I'm gonna try. And Thunder, gamestop was the first place I tried... they had sold their last one just about an hour earlier. So I tried walmart and had the same luck, empty spot on the shelf where it was supposed to be. I just had bad timing really. And I haven't made time to go since. My days are really busy lately, if they were open late I'd probably have had it for a while.
