Any gun enthusiasts here? Gotta get this!

One-of-a-kind Colt 1911. As of the time of this post, the bidding is just over $67,000. :wow:

SANguru 12-28-2010 03:39 AM

chump change for Kevin! get it!

KYZRSOSE 12-28-2010 11:02 AM

I'll stick with my AR-15 thx.

Beautiful 1911! Nice AR too, I want one someday.

Hows this for a present? My mother bought me a Taurus "Judge" 45LC/410 for Christmas! Don't try to shoot anything more that 5 feet away with bird shot in it, but it does good with 000 buck rounds made for it.

darwin316 12-28-2010 02:22 PM

wow...that's a lot of $$$.

I would rather get an Ed Brown or Wilson Combat Centennial for that price.

However, I did pick up a Nighthawk GRP Recon for xmas...to add to my Les Baer TRS, Wilson Combat CQB Elite 9mm, and my Dan Wesson CBOB :D

Weasel:

The Judge is great. It's not legal here in the People's Republic of California because our asinine gun laws call it a "short barreled shotgun". Whatever. Check out the new Winchester ammunition specifically for the .410 Judge. It's pretty impressive. Winchester PDX ammo

Those are some pretty crappy guns you've got, and 1911s at that. :wow: Maybe when you're ready to step up you can get yourself a nice High Point or a Lorcin. ;) I'm such a nice guy, I'd be happy to help you out by taking any of those off your hands. Heck, I'll even trade you one of those for a High Point.

That's an EOTech (512? 552?) with a 3x magnifier. I'm just sorta guessing. ;)

What is the setup on your RR? What is your intended purpose with it? How much do you want to spend? Optics can get very pricey but there are some less expensive options too.

Man...how can I resist?!?!?! I've been waiting all my life to get a Lorcin :D It'll be nice to own a gun that wasn't designed 100 years ago!

PersonaNonGrata 12-29-2010 11:16 PM

Done deal! Give me your FFL information and I'll send you a nice little Lorcin with faux pearl handles. :D Of course that would mean I'd have to find one since I'd never even let one get near my gun safe.

You have expensive taste in 1911s. I'd love a Nighthawk Custom, any of their guns. Or a 10-8 Performance pistol. Heck, I'd be pretty happy with a Springfield TRP or Professional. I'll just have to suffer with my SA Loaded Champion LW for now. :(

darwin316 12-30-2010 10:25 AM

Yeah, I'm blessed to have semi-custom 1911s right now (or lucky that my wife allows me to buy these :D).

But I've always been a fan of the 1911 design. My first gun was actually a Para-Ord P13 (double stack 1911 commander size). My second gun was the Les Baer TRS. I sold the P13 right after I got that gun. The difference between a production gun and a semi-custom gun is really night and day. Btw, I'm also a fan of the Springfield Professional and it might be my next gun. But the wait time is ridiculous, I had one on order for over a year and gave up and just ordered the Nighthawk.

I do think I'm good with small arms right now though since every gun I own has a different purpose.

The CBOB is my carry piece.
The CQB Elite 9mm is my main range gun (cheaper ammo).
The TRS is my 45 range gun.
The GRP is my nightstand gun since it has a light.

I think it's time for me to get into some long arms :D

or maybe actually start modding my stock M3!

edit: here are some pics of my TRS modified by John Harrison, my CQB Elite, and my CBOB. Still need to break-in the Nighthawk so no pics yet.

darwin316 12-30-2010 10:28 AM

btw, my wife also has a 1911 nightstand gun...an STI Off Duty in 9mm :D

(lets just say she works for the DOJ)

PersonaNonGrata 12-30-2010 09:03 PM

Dang Darwin! That is some nice iron you've got there. Obviously you're a 1911 connoisseur, not just a admirer. Everything you've done on them is great. I love the satin hard chrome finish for a carry gun. The 9mm 1911 is a very underrated gem of a configuration. The cheaper 9mm ammunition is a big draw and that's why I recently bought a, gasp, Glock 19. I'm not a big Glock guy but they do the job well and I got it pretty cheap.

1911s are an addiction. I just recently got my first one after 20 something years of pistol ownership and I'm already looking forward to my next one. I was never all that comfortable with single action, especially as a carry gun but decided to make the change when it became a viable option for carry. (Authorization to carry 1911s came recently.) I don't think I will ever be without a 1911 now. Next one: Probably a 5" model for range use. If I can get a bobtail semi-custom for carry I'd be all over it.

My poor little 1911. ;)

http://i220.photobucket.com/albums/d.../rcgrips05.jpg

darwin316 12-31-2010 06:26 PM

Thanks...and nice carry piece you got there! I wish my cbob was a lightweight model. The bobtail does help with the concealment, but an all steel commander is still hefty.

You should definitely get a fullsize 1911 9mm...it's a joy to shoot. There's barely any recoil, plus you're right about the cheaper, easier to get ammo.

And I do agree that 1911s are an addiction! Unfortunately, so does my wife.

Classic goodness! I would actually be tempted to do some custom work on such a nice foundation but that is definitely one pistol that should stay stock, just the way Dad liked it.

darwin316 01-02-2011 12:19 PM

I agree... If it was already an heirloom, I would keep it stock. But if I were to start the heirloom, then I would definitely do some custom work. Either way, I want one!

X5Flyboy 01-02-2011 06:32 PM

typically the 1911 requires ALOT of gunsmithing & practice to attain any degree of accuracy - originally designed to stop Moro dissidents in the Phillipines, where the .38 cal pistols failed to stop often drugged-high fanatics - Army wanted stopping power at close range

personally perfer my SW .40

I agree about the practice part as that applies to ANY firearm upon which one stakes their lives but the gunsmith part is not necessarily true. I think modern 1911 pistols are pretty much accurate out of the box as a defensive pistol. I think they are mostly more accurate than the shooter operating it like how most cars are more capable than the driver's at the wheel. I have always bragged about how my Sig P220 has a test target from the factory that is dead on with the first rounds out of it ever but I think quality 1911s can be just as good.

I think the bigger issue with 1911s is reliability. There is much discussion about 1911 reliability packages from gunsmiths, magazine and ammo selection affecting reliability, and which brand/model 1911s are reliable and which are junk. My opinion is much of this discussion is perpetuated because guys like to tinker and the 1911 is a much tinkered with platform. There are so many manufacturers of 1911 magazines and they have been around so long there are bound to be junk ones out there and that leads to reliability issues. As with any gun, certain guns can be finicky with certain ammo.

.40S&W is great and you can get a 1911 chambered for it. :stickpoke

motordavid 01-02-2011 08:46 PM

Slightly OT, on dissimilar 'older guns':
No gun xpert, and some of you have forgotten more than I know about them,
but I learned to shoot on my maternal grandfather's 300 Savage; it was a great
gun then, and it still is, as I inherited it. Decent old Weaver scope, and on a range
rack/table, the sumbitch goes exactly where I aim it, if I aim it well.
Smooth as silk, and it just 'fits'.

My gramps, (the original hero in my life, and still one of my 4 heroes), bought it new in '57. Beautiful rifle...

So, PNG/K's posts, and preceding ones, just made me think about 'older guns'.
Back to gun Pron Peruse. Very enjoyable thread, imo.

Hey MD! Old guns are great and ones that come with a story are even better. The older guns are sometimes like pieces of artwork. All the kids want the cool "black rifles" and Glocks but there is so much to be said for the artistry and history of firearms. Like I said, ones that have a story, particularly a family history, are the best. I don't have any like that but one day I'll have some to pass along to my family.

Speaking of old guns, here are some pics of 'my' 10 ga Damascus steel dbl barreled shot gun, made by my great-great grandfather, (on my father's side), Gideon K. Pheatte, ~1830-1880, a master gunsmith who lived during the Civil war period, and beyond.

I got this gun from my father, passed down through him. Never shot by me, only shot a few times I am told. He made dozens, but this was one of his masterpieces, as I have seen pics of others and nothing I've seen compares to this piece. I love it, and its family history. The Ol'great-great shows up on GOOG searches, too. Hope I didn't bore you all; I'm just proud to have it!
GL, mD

statdoc 01-02-2011 11:47 PM

MD, that is gorgeous!!! You are a lucky man to have that piece in general, and to know that it was created by an ancestor makes it cooler exponentially!

PersonaNonGrata 01-03-2011 01:34 AM

:wow: No bore at all md, unless you are referring to the 10 gauge bore. ;)

That is an incredible firearm and the history it represents is priceless. It reminds me of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in NYC and the arms and armor section. That piece could on display there. It is really is a priceless family heirloom. Thanks for sharing.

darwin316 01-05-2011 03:14 PM

darwin316 01-16-2011 08:25 PM

I wouldn't mind owning a USP as well... nice collection!

PersonaNonGrata 01-16-2011 10:02 PM

The USP is a nice pistol. I have two in .40S&W. I prefer my .45ACPs in 1911 form but do love my Sig P220 too. The only think I dislike about the USP is the proprietary rail but I get around that with a GG&G rail adapter.

Darwin: Love those grips on your Wilson Combat. They look like Lazza's Horned Lizards. Those are probably the next set going on my Kimber Custom II.

Here's a shot of my Springfield 1911. I shot some photos yesterday. I'm not quite there on my settings but getting close.

That is nothing to sneeze at, especially in Canada where I know you need the FAC and the restricted weapon permit. Plus, that looks like a Gen4 Glock which is not legal for civilian sales in California. (Long stupid story!) Good for you in owning a handgun in Canada.

Contrary to many non-American views (not necessarily meaning you), concealed carry is not that prevalent in the US. Many people believe that every American can get a gun and carry it and that isn't exactly true. Some states are much more lenient in terms of concealed carry but most are rather restrictive. California is one of the most restrictive when it comes to guns and legal concealed carry. It is illegal unless you have a permit to do so and the issuance of those is on a "may issue" basis rather than a "shall issue" basis.

Anyway, nice Glock. I recently gave in and got one myself. Gen3 G19 with TLR-2.

Two words: IN-SANE!!!

500S&W is frightening. Comparing it to a .357 Magnum really puts its size into context. :yikes:

PersonaNonGrata 02-22-2011 03:44 AM

I finally shot a S&W 500 today. It was a S&W 500 Performance Center and it was AWESOME! I was expecting something wrist snapping but it was actually quite a fun and pleasant gun to shoot. There is a ton of steel to counter the tremendous blast but it still had some pop to it. (See the size of the round above.)

We had a great President's Day shoot today with some buddies. One guy is a certified gun hoarder and he busted out his S&W 500. This is an example of what it can do with just a plain old lead target round, not a hunting round. I was at about 8 or 9 yards so close but none the less, this is one shot to a (now deceased) bowling pin. :wow: You can't really see it in the photo but the pin was eviscerated.

Well, just felt like bumping this thread as I just picked up a little piece of history. I now have a Winchester model 94, made in 1976 according to serial number. So the piece is older than me, but has only had 10 rounds put through it!

A friend of mine was given it by the original owner, who had never shot it... just soaked it down with a really cheap lube and stored it. The lube coagulated/solidified and had the whole thing jammed. My friend brought it to a gun shop that disassembled it and soaked it for months, then cleaned and reassembled it. When they handed it back to him they said it was essentially a brand new rifle! He went to the range and put 10 rounds through it, which to date is the only time it was made. So now he sold it to me for what he had in it after the gun shop..... so I got it for a steal of a price! Will put a few rounds through it this weekend and will take pics if I remember...

Congrats! A new addition is always a good thing. I've picked up a few things here and there with a Sig P220R recently to join my other P220. :D If anyone reading this has not shot Sig Sauer pistols, particularly the P226 and P220 models you really ought to. They are so good. Next to my 1911s, I love my P220s the most.

Post some pics when you get a chance.

I really want another SIG, am still kicking myself in the ass for selling the one I had... I am working on little projects for a couple of mine... One for kicks with a pistol and one for personalization with the newer acquisition. Will post pics when I get have enough time to finish the projects.

In fact, I just traded a Sig 226 in exchange for this little treasure.

S&W Model 27-2. Custom slab-sided barrel. Fine-tuned action (2 pound single-action trigger, that barely moves).:dancing:

This might deserve some cooler grips, though.

PersonaNonGrata 04-12-2011 05:50 PM

That is very cool, statdoc! That slab sided barrel is amazing looking. I got to shoot another S&W 500 but a 4" with full house Hornady loads. DAMN!!! The poor milk jug I shot didn't stand a chance. :D

A new addition to my little family of go-bang toys. :gun:

For the black rifle crowd, this is basically a 18" LaRue Tactical Stealth Sniper System in 5.56mm/.223 Rem with a Leupold Mark 4 optic. It's my "SPR" (Special Purpose Rifle) build. It shoots amazingly well, especially with 62 grain bullets. Love this rifle!

Very nice PNG! I think I've come to a decision on what I'm getting next... I know I wanted a .308 in 7.62x51 and decided I wanted an auto rather than bolt action, and with plenty of room to customize as needed. I think I'm going to end up getting an FNAR heavy 20" barrel. I figure it will be a great range gun with match ammo and awesome hunting rifle with good hunting rounds.

Anyone here have any experience with this beauty?

That looks like a great rifle! I'm not familiar with that particular rifle but FNH usually makes excellent stuff. A couple of guys I've talked to along the way have expressed subjective opinions about how FN rifles "feel" for them. It's just a matter of what you like. Of course buying the rifle is one thing but the glass on top is another. Dang that stuff gets pricey! I went with a Leupold Mark 4 because they are excellent, proven, and Leupold's lifetime warranty is famous for being best in the industry. I would recommend checking out some firearms forums for good deals. I bought my Leupold brand new in box with all papers, etc, for several hundred less than retail.

The only thing about a 7.62x51 is the cost of ammo, especially the match grade stuff you mentioned. There is no doubt about the potency of that caliber. I had a M1A but let it go to build my SPR. The 7.62x51 is just amazing.

Here is a nice rifle. Yes, there is a rifle in the shot.

Weasel 05-25-2011 08:16 AM

Nice optical illusion there... took me a minute or so to realize there was an actual rifle in that last one!

And yeah, I'd start by getting the rifle... putting a cheaper basic hunting scope on it "for now" till I could get a really good scope. And the Leopold is on the list of serious contenders. Add a bi-pod etc. and it will be awesome. And I'd pretty much be using the match ammo to sight in the good scope, normal ammo before and after.
