WELLINGTON — Investigators say alcohol and speed played a role in the single-car crash that left a 29-year-old man dead, thrown from his car this morning in Wellington. Daniel Portela of West Palm Beach had left the Player's Club Bar and Restaurant in his BMW M3 series and headed northbound on South Shore Boulevard, according to a Palm Beach County Sheriff's report. Portela, who was wearing his seat belt, could not "negotiate" a curve and lost control, said Sgt. John Churchill of the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office. The car turned clockwise, made it on to the median and continued sideways until it stuck a tree, which split the car in half, the report stated. The front half of the car continued to slide on the median until it struck a second tree, which threw Portela from his car, according to the report. That part of the car then caught fire. |
RIP Lucifer M3

What a shame. Wellington is an interesting area. My ex used to ride horses down there for the winter season--really competitive and rich area. Players club is no exception, and they are notorious for admitting underaged teen horse-riders in the club during WEF (winter equestrian festival).
I have never seen anything like it, 16 year old girls driving around in ridiculously expensive cars. I think my ex told me about a girl who was given an SL500 just so she could use it down there for 3 months of the year. Just plain ridiculous IMO. |
Looks like someone got a new 2011 M3 with Competition package and was driving too fast on local roads. Reminder that high speed should be reserved for track days only.

Very true, but the facts are, that more often than not, we test our cars on public roads. Is there anyone here who has not done this once ? I surely have. I rarely do these days and I was very lucky when I was this guys age not to end up as he did. This is a good reminder for folks. Even an Enzo can loose control when we challenge the laws of physics, not to mention throwing a little alcohol in the mix.

some decent sentiments coming from that community, unlike the jackass commenters on Jalopnik followed the link on some of his pics -- don't know if it was his profession, but he was a pretty talented photographer: Pik-Art DSG RIP, kid |
