Best Buy--customer service or rip-off?
Customer Catches Best Buy Breaking Law, Gets Banned From Store
Some companies sure are sore losers. Take for example the folks at Best Buy, who were not only caught violating consumer protection laws, but who then banned the customer who called them out in court for doing so. Full story at "The Consumerist". |
Hmm, tough call. Best Buy didn't charge him for the repair in the end but the guy still sued them. I figure BB should have been fined but I don't think the money should have been given to the consumer as he was not out of pocket for anything. It may be bad publicity for BB to ban him from the store but I see no problem with that in principle.
I actually like to shop at BB. I know what expect going in (not much) so my expections are low. I always know what I want before I go and ignore anything they tell me. |
Actually Best buy must have violated the law or the courts would not have ruled in this man favor. The trouble with any opinions about the matter is that none of us have the legal briefs in front of us to determine what Best Buy did.
As far as banning him from the store? Well I guess they must have counted the cost of doing so and don't mind the customers that will decide not to shop based on their decision. |
I can understand why someone would question why the guy went forward with a small claims court claim considering BB agreed to his demands. I can also understand the frustration people have with Best Buy (Worst Buy). They are a terrible retailer with terrible customer service and their Geek Squad is a joke. Personally, I think the guy's first mistake was shopping their and compounded that mistake by going there for repairs. I would guess that he has had prior bad dealinsgs with them and this was the proverbial straw.
Worst Buy definitely takes advantage of consumers and makes it extremely difficult to avail oneself of extended warranties. They put up road blocks to make it easy. I have been lucky in the past with the two extended warranties I purchased from them years ago but it didn't come easily. It took serious commitment to staying on them and a bit of savvy in knowing what to say and how to say it. I also read a story about a guy who wanted an iPad 2 from BB. They told him they were out of stock but he spotted some in a locked cage. He asked about them and was told that they were not for sale. I have heard that BB has intentionally held back inventory to manipulate their sales numbers. The guy asked a manager about them and was told that he could buy one but only if he bought an extended warranty. Talk about shady business! In case I haven't mentioned it, I hate Best (Worst) Buy. |
I love best buy! Buy broken Mp3 players for little to no money than buy a working product and swap it! woohoo! Only dont this once not sure if they changed any measures but it worked for me =D

+2...that kind of stuff, while bringing smiles and "right ons" from your buds, is not what makes the fookin world go around, imo. |

And back on the Best Buy story, I have no trouble with him being banned. They screwed up, they gave him the repair for free, and he proceeded to sue them just to make a point. So they get to make a point too. Best Buy has the same items and same prices here as Future Shop, and they are right across the road from each other. Future Shop has commissioned sales staff. Best Buy doesn't. I'd rather shop at Best Buy. I have low expectations of the staff at each store, but at Best Buy they aren't predatory. |
