Older M6
 

Hi all

have found a 1988 M6 'highline' for sale that I am going to have a look at. Apparently there were only ever 101 made.

Does anybody have any tips/watch out fors' to offer?

Great car but parts are going to be very pricey....There are chips out there that will give you another ~20HP which is nice.

Unfortunately I can't give you any specifics on maintenance issues, parts failures, etc.

I almost bought one of these in 1985!It is called an M635csi(dont think BMW ever labeled it as an M6?)

The 286 BHP engine is very robust.Its an evolution of the M1 engine(277bhp)and the latest evolution engine can be found today in the 360 Bhp M3 CSL, so you shouldnt have a lot problems with this.Just check for leaks around the head gasket.Depending on the mileage,check also if the Timing Chain has been replaced(100,000miles ++).
Never heard of any bodywork defect issues.Generally these are garage kept cars.

I can say one thing about the M6 engine. The valves need to be adjusted manually. Not a big deal but just a FYI. I also know the computer in the dash kept going out (the backlight kept going out). Beyond that, no other problems.

M6's are very expensive to maintain/restore. It is hard to find one in very clean condition. SI boards in clusters fail. Dual a/c is spendy and not fun to work on and when functioning properly, they dont cool very well due to the use of a small evaporator. The best mod for an 88 M6 can be found at your local hardware store...it called a For Sale sign. I wouldnt buy it LVR...its nothing but a money pit. I have had a few people that I have tried to talk out of purchasing an M6 and didnt take my advice. They bought it and now contribute a lot of money to my childrens college fund. :D If you must have it, then I would at least have it checked out before purchasing and also find a mechanic/tech with experience/knowlege of the M6. Just my .02 and then some. Good luck on whatever you decide :)
