Another reason to hate Best (Worst Buy)

I hate Best Buy. I hate their stores, I hate their staff, I hate their policies. Now I hate them even more.

This photo is from a Best (Worst) Buy in NJ from today. They are gouging people on cases of water, charging over $40 a case. They usually sell water in singles at inflated prices so they are charging the same inflated prices in case lots. (I don't think they usually sell water in cases.) I suppose they have a right to charge what they want but in the face of a looming ass whooping by Mother Nature where lives already have been lost, they want to price gouge on water. Classy, really classy.

Two things:

Stop Hurricane Irene with my superpowers.

Slap Snookie and The Situation. :flex:

I'm not in NJ, fortunately. Saw the pic on another site.

PNG/K...
Damn near RackIt territory!

Somehow, somewhere along the way, 'we' allowed the soft drink azzholes and their ilk, to put freakin regular ol' water in an absurd package, and sell the crap for a buck, to several bucks, a bottle...

Not that any of us can change that now, but if I go to a golf track that sells bottled water, and does not have any for free to fill a cup, I tell them to fook themselves and leave.

I wouldn't buy a freakin bottle of water, at any price, unless I was dying of thirst.

Snookie, now there's a beaut.

Kevin, I do recall your Superpowers, however. ;)

I haven't seen gouging at the pumps or hotels in the Southeast in spite of the storm. Got some (relatively) cheap fuel today: $3,69/1 US gallon ($0,98/litre) for mid-grade. I think taking advantage of folks who have to suffer through the storm is just bad and I'd report that kind of stuff to the authorities.

There's not much choice. Best Buy isn't great, but I'm not a fan of hhgregg either: they're not always cheaper and their salesmen are on commission so they constantly haggle/annoy me when I'm just browsing around. I think I'll just stick to Sears.......

I don't really have an opinion on BB, but it's not gouging. By definition, gouging is raising the price above the normal price in the name of profit from limited supply. In this case, BB normally charges $1.69 per bottle (same $ for all 20oz Coke products, BTW). 24 of them works out to be exactly $40.56.

If anything, they've broken out the cases out of convenience for anyone who wants to spend $40 on water at a time. Which is all together silly considering that it'll take about six minutes to fill twice those bottles with drinkable water straight from the sky.

Right, it's not gouging per se and you're correct that their single bottle size price is normally inflated anyway but it's just the fact that they put out the case as some sort of convenience for customers yet price it at the single bottle price. Again, it's their prerogative to price their crap at whatever price they want but it's the whole "here's an entire case to make it more convenient for you to get ripped off" approach that bugs me. Plus, I hate Best (Worst) Buy. :p:

$40 for a damn case of water??? I literally paid $3.69 yesterday per case. That's less than a quarter per bottle. And working out in the 102 degree heat, bottles of water and gaterade in the ice chest are just helpful and convenient...

My beef, besides the mercantile effort of BB/WB, et al, is that a public area, that has public crowds, (not that store per se), ought to have a public source of water available...I grew up with these on most corners and in most joints:

The marketeers would bottle air and sell it to us, if they could.

A toss away bottle of water, esp the packaging, freight, cost, etc., is like a nuclear powered weed eater, imo.
