Used Car ideas for a friend?

One of my carpool buddies is looking for a used car; his Infiniti G35 had a pretty bad issue with the fuel pump/system which left it undrivable and it has over 160.000 miles on the clock.

Normally I'm quick to point out suggestions but I'm not very good with "American" tastes, so perhaps y'all can come up with some bright ideas as to which cars:

His criteria:
  • Around $20.000, give or take.
  • Fewer than 48.000 miles (new or used)
  • It has to have "room", a sedan preferably although SUVs are okay. The 3er is too "small", for example.
  • Automatic gearbox
  • Something reliable (duh!)
  • Not too thirsty
He's thinking of just picking up another Infiniti since his has been overall fairly reliable and he likes the space. His G35 is getting repaired now and he might just keep driving it, but he's thinking about getting rid of it since it has so many miles.

I suggested a couple VW cars, but he would rather have the Audis (which aren't in his price range). Cars like the Ford Focus are too "downmarket" for him. Kind of hard to find a reliable, used luxury car at his price and mileage point, but let's hear the suggestions.

What about a preowned Lexus IS? I'm sure you can get one in that price range. And since it's a Toyota, it's pretty bulletproof

Def lexus Is would be a great pic for luxury with reliability. though it is kinda small.

That Lexus is nice, but one cannot lay a set of golf clubs, horizontal, in that midgey trunk...may not matter to M's friend, but that trunk is like a 3er.

I'm thinking of other cars...though I like M's VW sedan suggestion.
GL, mD

Lexus IS and VW would fit his criteria.

I suggest Acura TL.

Good Luck.

Well, isnt the Lexus IS even less roomy than the 3er, much less his current G35? Plus he's not that dissatisfied with Infinitis.........I will pose that Acura TL suggestion though. He didn't buy into the VW CC that I suggested.

I think it's hard to get a late model luxury car for +/- $20k that's cheap to maintain aside from the Japanese cars. :dunno:

Another vote for an Acura TL. Lots of good 2006-2008 examples under $20,000.
