Origin of pants below the butt ....
 

Saw this posted on Facebook. I've been guilty of wearing my pants a little low but not past my butt. Makes me feel uncomfy! LOL!

THIS TREND WAS BORN IN THE UNITED STATES’ JAILS, WHERE PRISONERS WHO WERE WILLING TO HAVE SEX WITH OTHER PRISONERS NEEDED TO INVENT A SIGNAL THAT WOULD GO UNNOTICED BY THE GUARDS SO THEY WOULDN’T SUFFER CONSEQUENCES, SO BY PARTIALLY SHOWING THEIR BUTTS, THEY SHOWED THAT THEY WERE AVAILABLE TO BE PENETRATED BY OTHER INMATES.

it is not true, it was started in jail, but it was because the prison took away your belonging including your belts so you can't hang yourself.

That's the version I had heard, from about Day 2, way back...was surprised at all the kids copying it, as I suspect most had/have no clue of its origin.

I suspect the kids did know the origins initially before it became a general trend for sheep. It was all part of trying to look 'gansta' in the Rap scene.

This is correct. This trend was started in NYS prisons back in the days. I have an uncle who is a retired corrections officer and my younger brother and cousin have adopted this foolery and he always tells them the same thing: "if you showing your ass that means you want some action". He says that this was mostly seen in the NYS Maximum prison system. Some states have passed laws that give police the right to write you a ticket for indecent exposure.

These stupid trends that idiot kids follow.... I don't doubt the origins. It's like the Hispanic gang members and wannabes here in California who wear long shorts with white socks pulled all the way up so as to now expose skin. I have heard in various classes that showing skin was for women and if you showed skin, that meant you're a "b!tich". :dunno: Prison culture is a very complicated and strange thing.

I just don't understand how these guys can do anything with pants down so low. I saw a guy last night at Kinko's with pants so low they were under where his butt would end. How do they stay up???

I see kids that struggle to walk, it is amazing what some do for fashion.

I guess it no different than woman wearing high heeled shoes.

It's completely different. Most women look good in high heels. All kids look ridiculous with butt hanger pants.

I once saw a snowboarder wipe out because his butt hangers suddenly became knee hangers and he was frantically trying to pull them back up. His pants were full of snow by the time he stopped sliding down the hill.

Yes it seems dumb but it does not hurt anyone other than the jerk losing his pants so I say not a big deal.

The world is what it is because people buy into and accept this crap, excuse it and even support it. Personally I aint buying it. Expect better? get better.

Kids always want to be different and its not a big deal though I wish girls would also adopt this fashion trend.;)
