Would you rent your Beemer?

Neil St. Clair owns a BMW 5 Series and if you want, he'll let you drive it for $15 an hour or $75 a day.

St. Clair -- like thousands of people -- doesn't actually need his car all the time, so he's decided to take advantage of a new peer-to-peer car sharing service that allows him to rent his car out to strangers and defray his ownership costs.

"With monthly payments and insurance, I was in the black last month," he said. "Basically, I have the car for free."

He made about $700 in May, he said, his first month using the site.

But for St. Clair and a lot of others, it's not just about the money. They like the fact that their unused car is doing someone some good.

"I'm glad I can help people out when the car is just sitting there as dead weight," said St. Clair.

Can't say I'd be comfortable letting someone do that for so little.

NO!!!

PersonaNonGrata 06-22-2012 01:07 AM

So many reasons why NO outweighs making a few bucks.... A spilled Starbucks all over the center console and iDrive controls maybe? Curb rash anyone? Car towed and impounded for 30 days after a DUI sound good? And so much more.... :tsk:

Strangers don't even sit in mine. Hell, I've only let the wife drive it twice!

blondboinsd 06-22-2012 11:06 AM

Hell No

Naz24 06-22-2012 11:41 AM

ummm no...

I let my brother drive my car once, he came back two days later with empty waterbottles everywhere, no gas, and 350 miles more on the odometer... Never let him touch my car after that... oh and did i mention he broke my dice cable by plugging it into his iphone with the case on--after me telling him NOT TO...

Not worth the hassle. what kind of moron does this,.. if you cant afford the car, dont buy it

Thread totally reminded me of Ferrari Guy For Hire.

Now, I would rent space in the X5 to deliver anything, anywhere – no questions asked – for the right price.

If you have to rent your car out to help out with it's cost then you have extended yourself on what you can afford--get a different car.

bmwbmwuser 06-23-2012 12:24 PM

Yes, I would, IF:
1. It's an older 5 series 15yrs+
2. Its got high mileage
3. Its got salvaged title
4. A solid rental agreement is used and the renter is screened properly.

Good return on "investment".
