Give a 2 year warranty or else
MILAN (Reuters) - Apple Inc on Tuesday disputed an order by Italian regulators that the company must clearly offer a free two-year warranty on its electronics or face fines of 300,000 euros ($378,200) and possible temporary closure of its Italian operations. Hmm...Ducati has gone to 2 years, and I read a snippet that F Car has/is going to 7 yrs, unlimited miles.
Back at the laptop/gizmo front, most PCs/laptops come with a year warranty, cheaply upgradable to 2-3 yrs, but if one's HD goes kaboom, (ask me I know), one has to box it up, send it back, wait for 'their decision' and get a new bareazz HD back. Not apples to apples, (no pun), but I think Italy is pushing as most/all their manufacturers/products have moved to the 2 yr min. With AAPL's cash hoard and lofty pricing on top computers, I am surprised if they don't fold and go along. GL, mD |
I think that Apple, and Microsoft before it, are easy targets. They are big and they have money. I'm not commenting on whether Apple is right or wrong in this case. Maybe Apple is particularly sensitive given the $60,000,000 settlement in China. Sure it's what Apple has rattling around in its ashtray but it's still alot of money and bad PR.
As an aside, I love Italy as a beautiful country to visit but their government is a racket. Fines, fees, and taxes are outrageous. Google "tourist rental car fines" and see one common racket that must net cities beaucoup bucks. |

Personally I hope they don't. Apple already has more than
enough in place to satisfy the consumer with regard to the products they sell. I don't think Italy needs any special favors regardless of how much cash Apple does or does not have. Quote:

I don't see how it is extortion. It is an Italian law, and it is harmonized with an EU directive, so Apple will face the rest of the EU countries after this one is settled. Italy is simply the test case.
EU law requires a two year warranty for defects on consumer electronics. Italy has charged Apple with not honouring their warranty without an independent report on the cause of failure, and with selling additional warranties that extend the standard warranty while not informing consumers that they already have an extended warranty under EU law. Sounds like a good moneymaker for Apple. I can see how they would like to continue. I don't understand why they don't just pay the fine and move on, it is peanuts in the general scheme of things. This is harming their reputation far more than the amount of the fine. And I don't think they have to call Italy's bluff, Italy has called theirs. They are facing a 30 ban on trading in Italy as they haven't paid the last fine. |

why they disagree so i'm Just stirring the pot.... If they found something in italy's law that isn't quite right it would be interesting to know what it is. Apple has said "“We’ve appealed the recent decision of the court as it was, in our view, based upon an incorrect interpretation of the law" Me? i'm just interested to see how it plays out legally. |
