X5 losing control in rain

I had posted the video of M3 crashing in rain. This time its an X5 losing control and hit by on-coming vehicle.

Proof that you have to adjust to weather conditions, no matter what car you are driving.

Wow, that X5 took quite a hit there!

Thanks for the reminder... I know that I feel overly confident in my X5 but do try to slow for rain or slippery road conditions...

That M3 crash link doesn't work any more. Here's a new link

Thanks, fixed it. Average driver also does not know how to regain control when the car is slipping.

Happened to my daughter 2 years ago while she was driving her 323 on the highway during very heavy rain. She hydroplaned and panicked. The front and side air bags probably saved her life that day and she got out with just few bruises. She learnt the hard way that time.

I don't know, generally I feel you gotta be pretty senseless to hydroplane to that degree. The X3, and I feel BMWs in general are pretty good at communicating thru the chassis, and I generally I feel that there's a point where the car just doesn't "feel right" and one naturally backs off, kind of like a "The tires/steering aren't really connected" sort of feeling. Sort of similar to black ice actually, the X3 is surprisingly adept at letting the driver know things aren't right.

I will admit that I tend to drive faster than average through the rain but am also well aware that physics cannot be overcome, and that my tires have 35% treadlife left. But I've never severely hydroplaned, closest I've come was 2 years ago when the pavement changed to a less porous section on I-85 near Gastonia NC in the middle of a curve, and my previous tires were nearly bald on the rear so it felt like someone yanked a chair from beneath me but it was of no real consequence.

iv had 2 5L mustngs, first one was highskool i had a drop top then upgraded to a procharged coupe, both foxbody chassis and iv never lost control even goin sideways in the rain in 3 yrs of driving the fishyest car out ther

I have to say that the rain is where the handling of the BMW shines but you still can hydroplane (yes you can feel it before it is bad) and watch out for others.

Ok, I am sure this posted elsewhere, but here is a 19 year old crashing an E46 M3 somewhere in Arizona...This time, no rain. :wow:

What every 19 yr old drives... And, the lack of driving skill most 19 year olds have.

My 16-year old went to driving school yesterday. A 16-year old friend of his drove there (with parent) in his brand-new BMW 3-series convertible. I don't know what's wrong with these parents... :damn:

Hydroplaning is a scary thing. Hopefully all involved are ok.

I realize the noveau-riche/one up the Joneses has taken over HS and even junior high, but I don't get the fawing, "let's buy Lil'Biff a new 3 series vert"...

My first car was a '52 Ford Flathead V8 with '3 on the tree'...when I was 19, I got to take a car back to the U: a badly used '62 VW Bug. And, I could drive much better than that kid in the vid. :D

Good luck to your son, learing how to drive!

All of you here concentrating on changing driving techniques in the rain; while it is true that driving style has to change based on conditions, you should all know and suggest to others that they check their tires frequently.

These tires wear out very quickly, the month to month change in tread depth can be great and probably more of an issue than "technique."

I hydroplane all the time. (well, in the rain)

The key is chassis control, and never having all 4 wheels off the road. God forbid if you are rotating when you hit deeper water. And of course you slow down if you cannot assess the roadway ahead of you...

The X5 and M videos all involve turning, lane changes in water. And not being able to correct immediately before the rotation develops.

The M3 was stupid- he was drifting to the right, unweighed, touched the shoulder and it was over. The head in hands was painful.

What's that old saying? "He ran out of talent halfway through the corner"
