No my X5 does not have a problem to report. What I need I someone to report
A good experience they had with their X. For example the other night a couple
was riding along with us in the back seat. After a while he comments WOW this
thing rides good I really love your ride. In fact I'm a bit lustful of it. All I could say was thanks.

I bring this up because day after day all people do is complain about their X and the problems
that they are having but they never say anything good about it.

So help me out let's write about some good positive experiences:thumbup:

I have a few in-law that drive new Infiniti and Lexus vehicles and hear the same comments when we take the X out to dinner.

They can't believe it's 11 yrs old and was purchased for under 13k + tax/tag/title.

I'm getting really tired of reading threads about people bitching about the same problems, most of which are covered countless times, and/or are age related/mileage related repairs one would do anyway.

My X5 at 11 yrs old drives 100 times better than my wife's '11 Rav4 and even my FiL's '13 Highlander Limited.

Amazed at the quietness in the cabin, and the smooth active driving experience.


My friends tell me all the time "You make too much money to drive a Bimmer" and I remind them it is 11 years old and plenty of E53's are less than 10k.

Would take my 11 yr old E53 over a brand new car any day, I can't find anything else that I actually WANT to drive, and that won't cost me 50k.

Just returned from a road trip on Monday, Vancouver to Calgary through the Rockies. Straight through each way; 995 km in 11 hours at 8.7 litres/100 km on the outbound leg (32 mpg Imperial). Loaded with luggage and two road bikes. Over 800 km on a tank. Came back a week later; it took over 12 hours due to three highway accidents, and it was 37 C out, but the X3 never missed a beat in either direction. Same mileage on the return. Vehicle remains very comfortable for a couple of full day drives. We had thought about selling it, but can't buy another with manual transmission so we're keeping it for a while longer. It is seven years old, but just under 100,000 km.

Fuel is now $6.05 per US gallon ($1.6 per litre) at home. A little cheaper in Calgary. Didn't dampen the enjoyment of the drive, though.

To be fair, it seems that mechanical issues and electrical questions are the only things keeping this forum going these days.

I agree. Honestly, you, MD, Jeff and some others have held up your end of the bargain. I've been away for some time and was really surprised to see the slowdown in off topic posting, so I'm still sort of amazed by that. I really expected to see posts from many of the people I remember.

On a side note, I have less issues with someone posting regarding a mechanical issue than I do with the 20,000th post about which aftermarket OE sized, cross drilled rotors are the best "upgrade". Sigh.

I think German cars in general are pretty reliable based on the sample my parents and I have had. My X3 was downright reliable, never left me stranded, and brought driving joy all the time. I expected about 1.500$ a year in repairs and maintenance and that's roughly what it was. It was a do everything car, from the beach (and surfboard on top) to the mountains with my DH bike and all the associated gear necessary for a race weekend. I racked up a good dose of km/mls on it and it went through everything from 42° heat in the South to -20°C cold in Montréal in the winter, starting up the first time in spite of the temperature extremes. In the end, it was clean, well-maintained, ran smooth, and everything (except the remote....totally my fault) worked on the day I gave it away. "Wow, that car is 10 years old? Doesn't look like it!" is a comment I heard a lot.

My mom's 06/06 SA-build 325i has required even less maintenance and repair than the X3 and has 153k km (95k mls) on it and runs great; my dad's 2013 Tiguan is similarly reliable and all have been rattle-free.

So I don't exactly understand the North-American belief that German cars are "unreliable".......try an Italian or French car. :rofl:
