I know a few people here have motorcycles... Tell us about it/her/them!!

I have a 2003 Suzuki SV650S. It was my first bike, bought in October '03. I really didn't think it was going to be so fun! I've had one semi-major down (moderate concussion & broken clavicle). But with how much it has been raining this season, I really haven't ridden much lately. I'm not one of those crazy wheelie guys who does stupid stunts on public roads. I would rather find a nice curvey road and carve it up! My best experience was on route 33 out of Ventura. I've also had major fun rides in the Malibu Canyons in SoCal. Other than that, my wife and I like to cruise up and down Highway 1 every now and then.

Mods include Scott Steering stablizer, Arata full exhaust, Harris bar end, frame & clutch sliders, CRG adjustable levers, PC III, and Sato custom rear sets with GP style shift rod, 520 conversion. My uncle is tempting me to upgrade to a MV Agusta Tamburini.. He has one in his shop in HK right now and can ship it over at cost which is still a little less than an X5 3.0.. hmmm...

Anyways, just went for a ride out at Mines Road today.. not that great of a ride since there is a little bit of gravel from the rain so I took it pretty easy and no crazy lean angles since i do want to come back in 1 piece alive...

on the topic of going down and concussions, wondering what helmet you have.. I have both a Shoei X11 and a AGV Titech.. Word on all the forums are people tend to get more concussions with the Shoei's/Suomy's/Exotech/Arai's. The AGV is by far the most padded helmet out there... just curious.

Padding is not that important. More for comfort than protection. It is the shell that protects the melon.

You know if a motorcycle (or bicycle) helmet takes a hard hit, it must be discarded. It is designed to absorb impact once. After that, significantly less protection.

correct me if I'm wrong, concussion is technical your brain hitting the skull. So for example, like football helmets, they were talking about the padding/shock absorbtion technology. So the more padding, the less likely your brain will take more of the impact right? :dunno:

i think you're asking about the impact foam used in the helmets... yes, they are designed to absorb and deflect the energy so that your head/brain takes less brunt.

and you are right about the concussion. its the brain that hits the inside of the skull... but if the energy absorbing foam can take away enough crash energy, it could prevent a concusion if the force was low enough...

the most important thing is the correct fit. the padding is there for the fit, not necessarily impact absorption. if there is space/air gaps the your head will move inside the helmet and add more to the damage...

if you look at the pro racers, when they take off their helmets, you see a faint impression on their cheeks where the padding has been squeezing on them. thats the proper fit.

and just like the good doc stated, M rated helmets are good for only 1 impact. SA rated helmets are for mulitple impacts (since you can be thrown around in a car and hit many things). In either case, after one accident, its time to get a replacement helmet.

Well as I am a manger of a motorcycle Dealership I have lots of bikes but I just use demo bikes now, And I just got the New R6RR it is awesome Just waiting for some better weather to use it only down 50 Miles on it !!
