Custom 'X' Bungee Cargo Strap

Contributed by: TurnAround

I decided it was time to get
a rear cargo area floor mat. My interior carpet is beige and I didn't
want to trash it (several close calls). The BMW cargo floor mat is
black, so.. perfect.

Only, I hadn't considered that adding the floor mat would cover up the
two stock rubber cargo straps in back. I use these aaalll the time, as
I can't stand having packages and such fly around back there when I
drive (as I corner, accelerate and brake hard... don't we all? ...
grins)

So I decided to make another custom bungee cord cargo strap like I'd
made for my Coupe. Not only would it work better, because it covers a
larger area, but it would look cool. Also, I hadn't initially counted
on it coming out in the shape of an 'X', but then I realized that this
was the best configuration, considering there are four cargo loops in
the floor. So that was an "X5 Look" bonus.

By the way, don't forget yer X's have several more flip down cargo loops on the back of the seat, up high.

The bungee is made from a single cord, into a loop, and then connected
with special "hog rings" used for elastic cording. At first glance, the
loop appears to only have one configuration. But by attaching and
releasing different points on the floor and or seat back, you can tie
down just about any object. All with this single loop. If you need it
to go over something large, you release a point or two, either at the
center ring or out at a tie down loop, and this gives you the correct
bungee tension for what you need. Very simple, yet all encompassing
design.

The black hooks at the outer edges are modified hooks from a Yakima
cargo net. The large side of the double hook has been ground off. The
inner anodized alloy clips are actually key chain clips made by Bison
Designs. Then, one huge rubber O-ring in the center. The whole thing
costs about $20. (Of course, this doesn't include the Yakima cargo net
I disected).
