BSW Replacement Mod
hey all! just an update. i received my kit tuesday.
unfortunately, i've been sick since then. today, i finally started feeling better and decided to start tackling this mod. first off, i must say, the direction that Micah included are phenomenal. they include step-by-step instructions w/ pics. also, if u don't already have a door panel removal tool, go get one. i started w/o one and thought for sure i was going to break my trim pieces; so, i stopped until i went and picked up the tool. i do have a couple comments regarding the instructions though. me, personally, i didn't remove the entire rear door panels. both the tweeters and mid-bass speakers can be removed w/o completely removing the door panel. also, being that i didn't remove the complete door panel, there is no need to attempt to remove the rear sunshades. for me personally, i think it's easier NOT to remove the rear door panels and sunshade. if u choose to remove the door to give u more working room, u will have to remove the sunshade, which is a PITA! as for the front doors; well, i tried to not remove the entire door panel, but no matter how hard i tried, it managed to pop off. no biggie though. and, if ur or anyone else's install goes as mine, u'll probably end up having some pics of plastic fall between ur feet. don't worry though. it simply slides back on to the inner middle part of the door panel. i'll try and take pics. well, being sick and all, this was the extent of my day of modding. all i wanted to accomplish was removing all of the speakers and, i accomplished that. tomorrow, depending on how i feel, i may attempt the installation. hope this helps.:) |
Sounds like fun - keep us posted on your progress! And where did you get the door panel removal tool?
|
update....
i purchased the door panel removal tool from Western Auto.
i've since removed all of the mid-bass speakers and installed the MB Quart's. when removing the factory speakers, the glue holding them in isn't really all that strong. the key is, there are 2 notches on the enclosure holding the speaker in place. what i did was, take an exacto/razor blade and run it along the outside of the speaker between the enclosure. once i did that, i took 2 small flat head's and plced the on both sides of this notch. w/ a little pressure, i was able to lift the speaker out and over the notch. by doing this, it made it much easier to remove the speaker. another hint, cut the 2 wires that are soldered to the spade terminals prior to trying to push the speaker thru the enclosure. be careful not to bend those spade terminals. i'm waiting to get my hands on a glue gun or some black silicone to finish up the mid-bass speakers. as for the rear tweeters, the directions call for gluing them in also; however, i may try something different. i'm thinking of making a a circular ring the same size as the factory tweeter and sealing the new tweeter to that ring vs. gluing the tweeter to the oem housing. this ring would slide and lock in place just like the oem housing. wish me luck.... |

what size are those speakers? and do u have dsp?
|
I do have DSP. the new tweeters, i believe are
1". the new dsash speaker, i think, is 2 1/2". i didn't actually measure them. I can do that when i get home today. |
update - mod is almost complete. obviously, i haven't been working
day and night on this. anyway, i made my so-called custom bracket for the rear tweeters. i had a few ideas and decided on one this evening. i've only made one of the brackets. when i make the other one, i'll take a pic of it. basically, all i did was take a piece of plexiglass and cut a ring out. i removed the rear tweeter from the housing that it came in and placed the tweeter thru the hole. i then slid the ring into the oem housing until the ring locked in place. by doing this, there was no need to glue anything. i don't recall the measurements though. on my next bracket, i'll measure. |
Thanks for the pics. They're totally helpful to see what the job entails.
Hope you're feeling better. Sickness has been no fun on this end either, but it allows a bit more time on X5World/modding. M |
Do you have DSP sound? The stock speakers/tweeters are already crossed over, so what do you do with the MB Quartz crossovers?? Don't really want to cross over the frequency twice!
Also, the stock speakers are 8 ohm while the MB Quartz are 4 ohm. I realize they will work, but this is not the current they are relly made for. You run the risk of burning out either the amp and/or the speakers. I have this dilemma because I have 2 new sets of MB Quartz sitting around which I have not installed yet because I can't find an answer... |

as for ohm ratings, i did not pay any mid to that. it is a very valid point though. perhaps that is a better question for Micah to answer. as of right now, the speakers sound incredible. i still haven't put the rear tweeters in yet though. i have to cut one more ring and then i should be done. did u order the BSW Kit? |
my circle cutting skills aren't the greatest, but
everything fit. by using this ring design, i did not need to use glue for this portion of the install. the tweeters are secure and ther is no movement. broknlgs24: Thanks for the detailed review, hints, etc.!
King: You bring up a valid concern. The best response I can give you is we've tested time and again, and we've performed I don't know how many of these Stage 1 upgrades using the factory amplifier without issue; we've NEVER seen an amplifier fail or overload as a result of this upgrade. |
Micah - i have a question. i couldn't find in the directions
any info. on removing or wiring the replacement dash speakers. i've removed them, but there are 3 wires going to each speaker. those 3 wires feed into, what i think, is some sort of resistor. from the resistor comes 2 wires that attach to the speaker. my question is, do i splice into the OEM wiring b4 or after the resistor? if b4, what wires do i use and what is positive and what is negative?:dunno: |
You'll splice into the OEM wiring AFTER the resistor. The wire with the stripe will be positive. Let me know if you have any more Q's!
|
micah, the directions supplied for installing
the tweeters says that the wire w/ the stripe is negative. i'm a little lost. so, the for wiring the tweeters, the wire that has the stripe is negative, but for wiring the dash speakers, the wire w/ the stripe is positive? |
Brian: did you get a chance to speak w/ Jason and get this sorted?
|
yes. we are all set. thanks again for
such an excellent product! |
You're quite welcome!
|
hey so i'm about to do this install ... any chance of getting the pix back up please? :)

Hi,
my 2001 X5 without DSP has 2ohm speakers. I replaced mid-bass and tweaters by JBL GTO627 and GTO17t. Where can I find 2ohm 2.5" mid-range speakers? |
