upgrade stereo+speakers w/DSP
 

i need to upgrade my stereo w/dsp + speakers? I have been told it cannot be done because of the DSP. Can any one help me out here on what or what not to do

It can be done, but it's not easy - or cheap
 

Others know a lot more about this than I do. I'm still formulating a "plan of attack" for upgrading my DSP system.

If you want to keep the factory DSP amp and DSP functionality, you have two options:

1. Just upgrade the speakers. This is possible (there are kits - search the boards). However, you'll need to be careful about matching the speakers to the amp. You can, apparently, install a subwoofer with its own amp but the rest of the speakers in the car will be driven off the factory amp.

2. take the amplified signal from the DSP amp and convert it back to a line level signal so you can send it through aftermarket amplification. No problem at all if you have the $. There are 12 channels that will need to be converted and amplified. You can save $ by summing some of the channels together, but you'll do that at the expense of additional signal processing.

there are many options to go. you can choose to remove the dsp as
"el duderino" has done a write up on how to bypasss the DSP. but that would require a skilled installer who has worked on BMW's . or if you want to retain the dsp amp Rockford Fosagte has a new piece that will integrate with the oem factory amp called the 3sixty.

However, it may not necessarily be right for you; tell us a little bit more about your complaints with the factory system and what it is that you want to gain by going aftermarket. That will help everyone here point you in the right direction in terms of a solution for YOUR needs.

I have looked at the BSW soloution and this looks a real good idea,But I am in the UK so I will have to buy speakers over here. Can some one confirm the sizes of speakers when car is ftted with DSP ?

We ship to the UK! :) Should run you about $100 or so for shipping.

Speaker size is non-standard, about 6." An aftermarket 6.5" won't fit without heavy modification, and a 5.25" is too small unless you use an adapter (which we include in our Stage 1).
