Aux input but with a switch?

I have read the articles section and I want to do the same as jmh.which is having DVD changer going through nav on TV and still have a spare aux for my i pod I understand most of it, but can anyone explain a little more about the relay and the switch? Also will the names of the tracks come up on the nav screen if playing Mp3 on the changer or ipod. Sorry if any of these questions seem lame but one of my friends is a bmw tech and will do most of the work for me, but he insists on only pulling the car to bits once otherwise he says I might get rattles. Do I need to get just the standard BMW aux lead? And a list of any other parts I would need would be great.

It is a X5 3.0D Sport 05 also right hand drive just in case that makes a diffrence anywhere

Many thanks.

Here's what I would recommend.

Get the Dension Ice Link Plus system for the iPod, which will give you song tags on the screen/MID. Also install the AUX for any other external audio sources you may want to pipe in (such as the DVD audio). That way you don't need a switch and get the best of all worlds.

(note that things piped in through the AUX only give you audio, but no display functions.)

But if I did that would I not loose my CD Changer? To be honest I could proberly do with out the i pod as would have a DVD changer. Can you put MP3 's on DVD? and play them through the changer if so how many will i get on a DVD disc. I just liiked the idea of the switch so had the option to use the i pod. There is a lot of helpfull knoledge of this board and just want to do this once and get it right the first time. The other factor is what you guys in the states pay for all the bits required to do the install they are double the price here in the uk :-( It is nearly worth me jumping on a plane to buy them all there!

Installing an audio A/B switch should be no big deal. I would think Radio Shack would have something like that. Do note that you won't have steering wheel control to change tracks on the DVD changer, you'll want some sort of wireless remote control. The steering wheel controls will only allow you to adjust the volume level.

Yes, if you install the Dension unit I believe you do lose the CD changer (I haven't bought a new CD in over 5 years - no big deal to me to lose it)

Why install a switch or relay? I replaced the jack on the aux input with a radio shack 3-conductor 1/8 inch headphone jack. It has additional connections for pass through audio which I connected two RCA jacks that my DVD player plugs into. So, DVD player plays through AUX input UNLESS something is plugged into the 1/8 stereo jack, in which case, the ipod (or other device) takes the connection. Simple, and far better then kludging a switch or relay.

Did you guys use the BMW aux lead or some thing else?

What do you mean by "or something else"? The BMW Aux Kit comes with a pigtail that has a 35mm jack on the end. From there you can run whatever you desire.

I have the Aux lead on order and should get fitted on Saturday with some other bits. Still a little puzzled about the relay but going to give it to go Worse case I am insured for fire LOL

Sorry one more question does the aux lead go in to the changer or through the nav tv as when I called up nav tv to order it they told me that there system comes out in mono !

Thanks again
