New Radio Module for '02 X5

I have an '02 X5 with Navi and no DSP. At least once or twice a day when I would start the X5, the radio, on both AM and FM, would be on 570 AM or 87.7 FM ie it would reset to the bottom of the band even though there were no presets for this. Round and round and FINALLY the dealer got it to do it on command and they have orderd a new Radio Module. This should mean I can now add an Aux Input and/or Sirius right? With this config - '02 X5 and upgraded Radio Module, does this mean the Aux Input has to be done at the Radio Module at NOT at the Nav/Headunit? Does this also give me MP3 capability with the BMW CD changer, purchased in Dec 05.

If the dealer replaces it with the latest available new gen radio module, then yes, you will get all that you ask about: Sirius capability, aux input capability, adn MP3 capability.

I think that the X5 started getting the new gen radios part way through the 2002 model year, but I am not sure exactly when. So, it is possible that your car could have the old gen radio. If that is the case, it is possible that you may just get a remanufactured old gen radio, which would not have any of the above capabilties. However, it is more likely that you have new gen and you will get the latest new gen replacement.

When you get the car back for service, try to confirm the part number, either from the receipt or by reading it from the new radio module. Then, if you post the PN, folks here can confirm its capabilities for you.

Yes, you will have to install the aux cable at the radio and not in the console area. So, if you do the aux input, you will probably need to run an audio cable up to the dash area. No big deal, considering all that you will gain from it.

Keep in mind that if you want Sirius on the X5 w/ NAV - you will need the MKIV NAV computer (DVD-based). Otherwise, you are compatible for AUX already.

Tom, do you have sigs for different boards with different BMWs on them?

The Aux Adapter accepts headphone level audio right - not line level? Any thoughts on routing that cable up to the front?

The cable is already up front, it will either use an existing connector behind the NAV screen on NAV applications or plug into the radio on Business CD applications.

The AUX connector features a 3.5mm headphone jack.

Unless I am mistaken, on an '02 (even after you replace the Radio Module with a new one) there is no connection between the Radio Module and the Nav headunit for Aux. The Aux cable and its associated 1/8" female jack mean you have to either put our iPod (or whatever) in the back or you have to extend the 1/8" jack up to the front.

You're absolutely correct on the pre 09/02 NAV applications. You would also use the Business CD AUX kit instead of the NAV-specifc verision if you have an updated radio tuner.

The DICE iPod kit has an integrated AUX port and the length needed to bring the AUX jack up front as well as integrate an iPod to the system.
