Dension gateway 400
http://www.dension.com/icelinkgateway400.php
Has anyone had any experience with this product? As usual I have spoke to dension in the UK (The importer) I would get more sense from a 3 year old  Apparently it does not work with DSP but when he asked why and does it make in difference if Digital DSP or Analogue just silence! But according to them ice link does not work if it has DSP either and mine does thanks to Tom's leads. The only thing useful I could get out of him was it plugs into the changer leads like the US version icelinks do.I Really want to try this product, but you cant do that he told me. So I was wondering if anyone else had tried this product or if Tom from EAS can come to the rescue as always does! |
I've tried one of these.
Yes, it plugs into the CD Changer connections. With Analogue DSP it will work no problem. With Digital DSP you would need a A->D converter and you would need some way to connect that up to the cable, probably easiest to cut off the existing connections from the Gateway harness and connect up to the A->D using RCA plugs. The OEM CD retention facility would NOT work without a D->A converter as well, so you might as well go for the Gateway 300 if you have Digital DSP, save £30 and lose the CD Changer. Audio quality is good. Build quality is so-so, the case comes apart very easily which is a bit of a worry. Device switching is 'interesting'! Devices have a priority, iPod highest then USB, if neither are connected then the AUX source is selected. To switch to the OEM CD Changer there is a switch on the Aux input 'dongle', change the switch, turn off the ignition, turn it on again and you have the OEM CD Changer, to go back reset the switch and toggle the ignition again – impossible to do while driving Head unit display is similar, if not identical to the ice->Link, so on the Nav that means font size changes when scrolling which is VERY irritating. iPod/USB navigation is a bit tedious if you have any number of Artists/Albums/Play lists, but OK if you just have a USB memory stick or iPod Nano. Personally I still prefer the Intravee (www.intravention.co.uk), although USB support is still not available due to continued delays with Alpine and the KCA-620m. |
Thanks for the quick reply! I have Analogue DSP so that is good news then. Did you try the video part through the I pod again the guy at dension was very vague. To be honest I look at the intravention product ages ago mailed the guy and waited and waited about a week after I bought my ice link he mailed me back. I hardly every use the changer only if i buy a CD while I am out of if I take the I pod out and forget to put it back in the X5. Do you still have the gateway I might be interested in buying it if you want to sell it. You have given me more info than the importer which is slightly worrying.

We offer MUCH better support on our DICE products and it is a much more stable system than the Dension piece. |

He wants to be able to use his changer as well as the ipod because he has a few different cars and might leave the I pod in another car or at home and no music so must be switch able back to cd. So I thought I would buy a dice from you get the trunk leads easy problem solved he wants to be able to search by artist which dice don’t do also slightly worried about up grading dice as cant download firmware like ice link. So I thought maybe give him my ice link and me get a dice, but then I loose out on artist search too. With the gateway I thought you got the best of all worlds and he can plug I pod video in too and get on screen which he don’t have so I said he could try that if he did not like I would swap my set up and I can have gateway and watch I pod videos on nav screen. The problem is he has seen my set up and drives my car quite a bit and used the i pod in there and likes that. |

The browse by artist feature on the ice>Link is torture if you are trying to get to an artist in the "LMNOP" range. Most people were unplugging the iPod, choosing the artist and plugging back into the connector. If the iPod remains unlocked - this step is omitted. |

We're here if you need us on support or pre/post sales questions. |
If you tried to get an Intravee a while ago then you would have had problems as there were none available. As of now they have plenty of stock.
Although the Intravee (or to be more accurate Alpine KCA-420i) does lock the iPod click wheel I've not found this to be a problem, in fact it is irrelevant to me as my iPod is in the boot. In the UK at least, I've not had any problem with heat or cold affecting the iPod and over the summer it did get pretty hot. The Intravee UI means that you just don't need to use the iPod at all. In the UK it is quite likely that if you were seen by a traffic policeman to be using an iPod while driving (including while stationary at lights etc.) that you would be prosecuted for "not being in full control of your vehicle". There is little doubt that the iPod does indeed provide the best way to control the iPod, but not when you are driving. With the Intravee you can very quickly browse to any Artist/Album/Play List you like because you can select next/prev or next/prev in increments of 5, 10, 20 or 50. It takes a few seconds to find any item. If you want to maintain a CD changer, to provide 'backup' if you leave your iPod behind for whatever reason, then you can connect both an iPod and Alpine CHA-S634 MP3 CD Changer (actually you can connect up to 6 devices). The Alpine CD Changer is physically identical to the BMW changer and can utilise the same mounting bracket. |

Actually, no I didn't, I could have done as I have the AV in capability on the TV. I 'think' that the video output would only be available when playing videos from the iPod directly using the iPod UI (you can switch between Dension and iPod UI as you can with the ice->Link). I don't have the Gateway 400 at the moment, but I can try it for you if you want. Quote:
I still 'own' it, but someone is borrowing it at the moment. I don't plan on selling it, but if I change my mind I'll let you know. I have never seen a good report of Dension support in the UK, but then again I guess if someone gets good support they don't tend to post on a forum! |
