Poor FM radio reception
 

Hi, ever since I bought my car, I've had poor (staticy) radio reception. All I care about is FM, not AM. This question is not about the well-known bad AM quality. Talking about 2001 X5 with 16:9 MK4 NAV unit.
I don't have any aftermarket tint or part in my car, everything is original BMW.
I tried to enter the radio menu to see if it's programmed in US mode, but no matter what I do, I cannot get into it.
I turned radio off, then on, and held the SELECT button for even more than 10 seconds. The system did not react at all. Is there any other way to enter that menu? I've read about holding the "M" key, but I can't find that on my car.

Nice list but you didn't check the most important thing first- the antenna connection. Check the manual, there's info on where it's located.

Just read the manual, it does not contain info on the radio antenna location.
Did a search on FM antenna location with no results.
If you know where it's located, can you please post it here? ...or provide a link with that info?

I have trouble like this with my radio. I am interested to find out if anyone has any info.

Are these vehicles with poor FM reception previously-owned vehicles by chance? If so, I would check the entire length of the antenna cable to make sure nobody had done any 'modification', epossibly for added FM modulated devices, etc. Somebody could have possibly left an FM modulator plugged in for all you might know.

As for checking the antenna connections themselves, the FM antenna amplifier is located above the drivers side rear wheel well. Unfortunately, in order to get to it to check the connections there, half the rear of the vehicle needs to come apart, but it could very well be a source of these issues. Hope this helps. If it does, please keep me posted, so I can give the advice for others here and on other forums at a later date. Sorry guys, but if some of the idea's work, I can't keep it just an X5World secret :)

Thanks for the info. I was able to locate the antenna according to your description. It has 3 inputs/outputs, all different. From there, at least one of those cables should go straight to the Radio Module underneath the spare tire, am I right? Or it should go to a FM amp and then to the Radio....

If I understand it correctly, the antenna signal goes from the antenna, to the antenna amplifier, then to the tuner in the rear of the vehicle. I'm not sure off hand what the 3rd cable might be, I will look into it.

Do you know by any chance where is the amplifier and what it looks like?

What's the module in the rear cargo door? By the spoiler?

That's the antenna adapter, the antenna cables rarely fail in these vehicles. Does the FM reception deteriorate when the rear defroster is active?
