2001 Aftermarket Head Unit
I have an '01 X5, and want to add an aftermarket head unit with touch screen navigation. Any idea on what direction I should go? Need help finding a bezel to work with it too.
Criteria: Touch screen Navigation, DVD enabled, iPod enabled, and Bluetooth. Any help would be greatly appreciated. |
There are a few people who have done this - do a search for "AVIC" and you should find the info you need.

AVIC-Z1 by Pioneer sounds like the system for you. I am about to do this mod myself. Should cost anywhere between $2000-$3000 depending on installer, where you get the parts and what not. Circuit City quoted me at $3800, which is crazy. |

I have the eclipse AVN 5435 and I love it. Touch screen with Navi, CD, DVD, etc... Nothing comes close for the price.

A buddy of mine also has as Eclipse head unit and loves it - it has dual DVD players built in so you can run the nav DVD and play music at the same time. Of course if you buy one with a HDD, you don' need the dual DVD. |
Dual DVD players? Mine has a DVD slot for the Nav/ DVD's and one for CD's. New Model?

Ok,Ok, here are afew. I plan on making another trim piece that will make it flush with the dash. I just have to get sometime to do it. BTW the movie I was playing has a blue tint to it. It's not the player.
Opened showing the DVD/Nav slot and CD slot http://s36.photobucket.com/albums/e3...h_DSCF1195.jpg Shot of it closed http://s36.photobucket.com/albums/e3...h_DSCF1197.jpg Shot of it at night http://s36.photobucket.com/albums/e3...h_DSCF1198.jpg |

Just Curious
How much does this aftermarket nav setup from Pioneer cost with the bezel and full installation?
I would guess around $2500? I am considering it instead of a Garmin unit, but the cost may justify going with a Garmin |
Costs
I've been doing some checking, and it looks like the unit with everything that I need (bezel from www.mybimmer.net, Sirius tuner, iPod hookup, and bluetooth) should cost right about $2200. Cosider this: you get more than just the nav part, and if you install it yourself, you get a really sweet custom install.
Also, one very minor mod and you get the full touch screen access through an on off switch so that you can stay "legal" in states that prohibit some types of mods. |

In case anyone was wondering...pretty much every car audio company is coming out with a system like the AVIC-Z1...which have all been unveiled at the CES show in Vegas this week. It would be wise to wait until March to get something because we all know that with more competition the price will come down. Even Pioneer is coming out with something similiar to the Z1...AVIC-D3. And, it is only $1000 retail. You would of course have to buy all the add-on's but it is a lot less than the Z1 which retails for around $2200.
