What connector is this?
 

Hi guys. This is my first thread so bear w/ me. I own an 01 X5, no nav, non DSP, no premium sound. I'm putting the finishing touches on my first mod, installing my changer in the center console and building and installing a sub in the right rear where the factory sub would go. I've read virtually every post on this site about the subject and other sites as well. I'm still trying to locate the infamous "blue Conn" for the sub signal. The only one I've found so far is on the left rear near the amp. It has 15 wires going in and is terminated w/ a 10 pin black plug labled AMP. Is this where I get the factory sub signal? :dunno:

It looks like the Voice Recognition Module connector that works with the phone / navigation system.

Thanks. I guess I'll keep looking. The interesting thing about this mod is that the wire colors that I've read about for the various conn's is different on mine except for the pwr turn-on and ground.

If you do not locate the amp-to-sub connector you can always just tap the sub signal right at the amplifier on the left rear. If you need the wiring colors let me know, I have it at home. You might also want to refer to this article: http://www.xoutpost.com/articles.php?...icle&artid=128

Thanks NCX. That's one of the articles I printed before I got started just in case I needed a backup plan. I have removed virtually every panel in the back except the carpeted one just under the rear window and that's probably where that conn is. If you can find the wire colors when you get home I would appreciate it.

When you eject the connector from the factory audio amplifier, is it a large 42-pin connector? I don’t know what the connector looks like on an ‘01 non-premium stereo but it should be the same as the rest, just less wires in the connector. If it is a 12 or 15 pin connector let me know.

You may need to unwrap some of the wire wrap and get some good lighting for this part. On the 42 pin connector you will see the pin hole numbers embossed into the plastic. Get some good lighting and locate wires in positions 1 & 2 (right rear woofer signal) and locate the wires in position 24 and 25 (left rear woofer signal). These wires should each form a twisted pair as they go back up into the black wrap. Wire colors can vary as I found out during a recent install, but positions/pin hole numbers are always right so go by number not color.

Depending on what amp you are using you can either run it as a high-level input or step it down with a line-level converter. Let us know how it turns out. Also, I think some people here would be interested in the dimensions of your sub box. Good luck.

Where is the factory amp located at?

Look at the horizontally mounted black box below your nav/cd changer/etc. The connector is on top.

Yes, the amp is located there regardless of whether or not you have nav and/or the CD changer installed.
