Speaker Replacement options
 

Looking to replace the door speakers, I'm looking for recommendation from members who are using the factory amp with aftermarket speakers. I like the idea of the BSW upgrade , but the cost is presently more than I'm willing to spend for speakers.

So if you have made the switch which brand/model/size did you go with?

What type of modification (if any) was accomplished to make them fit?

Would really love to go 6.5 components, but would pefer not to cut my doors to pieces making them fit.

I'm looking at installing in a 03 non-dsp, without window shade.

I have changed out all of my doors with Alpine SPS - 17C2 6.5" 2 WAY SPEAKERS 250W. I still used the factor amp which is doing an oustanding job in conjunction with the head unit. The main difference is that I have also upgraded my head unit to the Ecplise AVN 5495

The trick is when you go to remove the old door speakers from the doors, you have to press out the old speaker with you hand (they are held in by strong glue/slicone). You will start to notice the speaker moving slowly away from the plastic housing that it is enclosed in. once you have removed the speaker from the housing simply insert the new 6.5" speakers (which will fit perfect), screw them down in the housing and connect in the wires. From this point re-install the housing back into the door, do a test and you should be ready to go.

Question... What did you do with the factory mids and tweets? The Alpine SPS 17C2 is a coaxial speaker, as I am sure yo know. If you connected the factory amp and wiring to it you are only feeding them a midbass signal and not full-range since it is x-over'd at the amp (each component speaker gets a dedicated, crossed-over signal on it's own channel of the amp). You must have done some additional wiring or something to account for the x-overs and component wiring. Curious to hear about that modified setup. I think this is a first - removing the component set and installing a coax.

Look at component sets from MB Quart and Rainbow and some Infinity's. They are known to fit the factory speaker housing without much trouble.

You are correct and I'm sorry that I forgot to mention that I simply wired the coaxial tweeter (which has a bass blocker connection on the wire)section (which had enough wire to connect to the speaker connection) to the speaker and it gave a clear and crisp sound to carry through with the mid range. I left the tweeters in the doors alone because combined with those speakers it gave enough mid & high range. I also added a powered sub in the rear to assist with the low end.
