Getting Sirius, what parts?
 

I have read a lot of things and there are so many part numbers that I am going crazy. I just want to finalize the parts I need.
I have an 02 X5 and just upgraded to a MKIV. Do all I need now is a BM53 radio tuner and the BMW Sirius module?
I have seen these parts on EAS and BSW, do those kits include the cords and everything else necessary for completion.
I really appreciate any info as I am sure some of you have answered my question before. I am just being cautious and paranoid that I might get the wrong items.

These are the parts I used when I did my Sirius upgrade to my E38. I chose the SIR Mini antenna, because it is much less expensive and some think it has better reception than the BMW OE antenna. I would go with BMW's OE parts for the X5, which include the antenna mounting bracket, antenna, and antenna cable.

I would get all of the parts from a dealer with good Internet pricing, like Circle BMW, Crevier, Pacific BMW, or Tischer BMW. Tischer BMW (www.getbmwparts.com) is my current favorite.

A dealer is probably the only place you will find the cable, so that is pretty much a given. You can find the Sirius modules on eBay, but the two good part numbers do not show up that often for a price to make it worthwhile. I watched eBay for a couple months and just gave up and bought one from a dealer. I wish I had done that from the beginning.

You might find a radio module on eBay, www.bimmernav.com, or just pull the trigger from a dealer as well on that.

If you go with the Terk antenna, eBay is the best source. Otherwise, you will have to get the BMW OE Sirius parts from a dealer.

If you buy your stuff from Tischer BMW, you will have to specify each individual part you need-- I am not aware of any pre-defined kits. If you order from BimmerNav, they can help you put together a kit for your car. I am not sure if BimmerNav identifies everything on their web site, but they can certainly get it. If you were to fashion an "official" BMW Sirius kit for your car, these would be the current parts (except for the radio) that you would need:

65.12-0 416 377 Sirius receiver
65.20-0 034 887 BMW Sirius antenna
84.11-0 141 976 Installation kit
84.11-0 141 977 Audio extension cable
84.11-0 141 978 CD Changer "audio Y cable"

It does matter which BM53 radio you get. The oldest part number that will work is PN 65.12-6 927 911. And, the newest BM53 radios can work with a new CD changer to fully support MP3 CDs. The BM53 PN 65.12-6 988 276 is the remanufactured version of PN 65.12-6 988 275. The two are effectively identical, except the remanufactured version comes with a $500 core charge. The -275 version of the radio is more ($485, I think), but it does not have the core charge. Tischer BMW has the -275 radio, but it does not show up on their online site because of the way that the parts catalog is organized. You can request the -275 radio if you email them or specify it in your comments.

One more questions is would I need a conversion kit for the BM53? I have read about the pins (flat and round) being different. Or is that where the cd changer "Y" cable comes in to play?

Check to confirm that you do not already have an early BM53 radio. You might, with your model year-- I think that BMW introduced the BM53 in some models during 2002.

Yes, the pins are different. The BM53 radio has flat pins, where the earlier radios have round pins on the plugs. If you have an earlier radio, these are the adapters you will need. Oh yeah, you might as well get the Aux input adapter too, to complete the perfect package.

Thanks again for the other numbers. My car was produced in 04/2002. I think the new radios started 09/2002 or something. I guess I could pull off all the crap and look. But that would suck.

Thats a lot of wires. I really need all of those? Nothing like a BMW. What does the Aux input do for me? Is that located in the back, or will that be up front so I can get an mp3 player?
