no-dsp speaker upgrade ?

I just bought a 2005 X5 without the DSP... now for some mods. It is clear that a sub needs to be added. My question is what speakers are a good upgrade for the door/dash speakers that can still be driven by the factory amp and will look completely stock when done ?

How many speakers come in the non DSP setup?

10 speakers... no sub woofer.. hence the reason I'm bugging you to build one :D From my understanding it is much more of a conventional setup.
I'm not looking to shake the car next to me.. just want clean sound at a resonable volume level. I'm looking to do a 1-2K upgrade...with me doing the install work. For me, true high-end is for the home... and it has a nice amber glow in the dark..

Checked with Best Buy and they can put a 10" sub in a box, with Alpine Amp hidden away in the side compartment for about 500 bucks. Other than needing more base I am happy with the factory speakers. They only issue is the pre-out location. If they cant find it they will use a rear speaker signal and use that for the sub! Not sure how good a signal thats going to be. Anyone know if there is a sub pre-out anywhere back there for a 2003 non-DSP car!?
Thanks

I'd never let BB work on one of these.

To answer your question, if the fronts have the same tweet/mid/woofer crossover-frequency architecture, the problem is finding replacements that play that frequency range sent by the OEM amp.

No one seems to have a cone mid that will fit in the dash. All the dome mids I can find that fit in the dash won't play as low as the signals that BMW sends the cone mid (by a good amount, like an octave or more).

All the upgrades that I've read about for three-way front setups were replacing the woofer and tweeter and leaving the OEM dash mid in place. I'm sure this is an upgrade, but it just feels a bit "kludgy" to me.

Before making any changes, be really clear on what part of the sound you have is dis-satisfying.

I will need to live with it for a while...and let it break in. I'll be just picking it up on Thursday. From the limited listening at the dealer it is really not that bad... no bass is the obvious issue. Just thought I would start learning from other folks. I thinking I'll mainly be looking for some upgrades of the front woofer & tweeter and a sub...just hoping to tweak the factory setup a bit.

Got my X5 yesterday and the system does not sound too bad on most music. i find that I have to adjust the bass down a bit and keep the treble near flat with a front fade. I'm using the rear just for a little fill so it does not confuse the image too much. I find it actually images fairly well for a car. I definitely need a sub since turning down the bass is the only way to make the stock speaker sound o.k. I would then be interested in finding a mid bass upgrade for the fronts. El duderino I've seen you recommend the DSL UP6 elsewhere, will the tweeter fit in the sail pods? Is the mid-bass available separately? If not could you recommend another mid-bass driver. I think the factory mids & tweeters work fairly well together.
