Got a new passport radar detector, how to wire switched?

My kids bought me a Passport, and for now I have it plugged into the cig lighter 12 V, which is real inconvenient since it tends to lay on top of the Navi, AND the cig lighters and any other 12V PS are all unswitched meaning that even when the car is off, it's still drawing power.

I'm sure someone has connected it directly into a fuse that is switched, and I tried searching and reading the owners manual but can seem to locate one.

So I ask you, my friends, without taking the autowiper sensor box apart, if I want to just use the suction cups BUT connect it permanently so that it's switched so it doesnt draw power, who has sucessfully made a permanent, switched connection.

Many thanks as always,

Ed in NJ

PS. I think that I have to buy a cable to replace the coiled cord, any suggestions as to where to buy would ALSO be greatly appreciated.

Hope everyone had a safe and Happy Halloween..

edco,

There are lots of posts on x5world about hard-wiring radar detectors. Suggest trying a couple of searches.

How about "valentine" or "passport" or "hardwire"...

LazyDog149 11-27-2008 09:11 AM

i just hardwired my passport last night in my a e53... overall pretty easy

you need:

hardwire kit not the smartcord to do my install
phillips head
torx head 10 i think
flathead wrapped tape

its pretty much like the install on the from page, but use the flathead to remove both the front light assembly and the rear bmw assist assembly once you have those out you can use the torx to remove 4 screws...

fish the hardwire line through the front headliner

for mine i wiretapped the garage door opener line it was green with a brown stripe...

ground into a screw that touches the frame of the car

test... and put back together
