Is the AUX kit the same for E46 and X5?
I dont want to lose the CD changer, and for the moment I need an aux adapter for my XM radio (no need to explain all that now).
Tom (or anyone else), I have access (ie, free) to a brand new BMW OEM AUX kit for an 04 325Ci. Will the same kit work in my 06 X5 with Nav/non-DSP..? Thanks Ed |

Sorry to bump in, but I'm also interested in an AUX jack install. I don't have navi on my 03 X5 with DSP, and I don't have confidence to install the Dice. I just want a simply way to play my iPod in my car  any suggestions?

Couple of question if you dont mind.. A) Do you have Nav..? B) Which kit did you buy ie, the EAS kit or the OEM kit or something else C) What did you use for a guide..? D) Year of your X5? Thanks Ed in NJ |

A) yes i do have navi B) i purchased the kit the Tom suggested from EAS(look at post #5), they have both kits with and without Navi, the harness is right there behind the Unit it clips right in. C) i check out post number 24 in the STEREO section on the home page, Installing the AUX Input on an X5 - X5world D) my X5 is a 2006 3.0i without DSP and it has Navi. i actually used my key and my fingers to pop off the trim around the Navi. it comes right off. start at the bottom and work you way around, it will pop right off. its really simple, on my X the top screws are in the coner not in the middle like in the picture, i guess they changed it, and its T10 screws. and run the wires up from the glove compartment first dont clip it in and try running it down its harder that way. you can just grab it with your other hand if you push it up throught the glove compartment. sliding it down it will just go where ever it wants to go. and when you make the holes for the faceplace screws make very little holes and force the screws in so its nice and tight and wont come loose. good luck let me know if you need any more info. |

I'm still just trying to weigh the pros/cons. Thanks. RP |
You have lots of reading to do. Check out the home page. Briefly though, the only thing you can do w/ aux input is get sound. Nothing else.

No problem. I just seem to recall there was a spreadsheet on the homepage that showed the functionality of the 3 choices quite well.
Yes you need to do everything through the ipod itself, including volume control if you do not get a dock connector cable (so make sure you get one). It was just a straight input source to the radio designed way before the age of ipods, etc. Quote:

i have the AUX input and i contral the volume from my steering wheel or Navi unit, and it can also be controlled from the ipod itself. but i can be controled from the steering wheel.
|
Actually I think it's worth it. It's relatively cheap, $30 or so, OE BMW, and gets line-level sound from an aux audio source. That's enough for some people. Others understandably want more control and sophistication. YMMV
gianvito - if you control the sound from your ipod in addition to your steering wheel/nav then you are using the headphone jack on the ipod for output. Get a dock connector cable and the sound will only be regulated by the steering wheel/nav controls. |
theres no way that the text will come up on the screen right? its just an audio output?
|
With aux input, that is correct.

OK. so I got the AUX done for FREE, in the glove box, today at my dealer. It was free because I had won $100 gift cert for parts/services when I went to the Series 7 launch, plus he cut me a little deal on the price so I paid nothing but $7 in NJ state sales tax. It sounds great especially for my simple needs.
However, I noticed that I now have a DIMLY lit CODE light/selection on the Nav screen. I dont mean code like an error code, just the word CODE, but I cant toggle to it..or do anything with or through it.. I'm sure if I "RTFM" I would find the answer, but I'm really tired from travelling today, so would some kind soul please take pity on me and tell me what it does, should do, supposed to do, or some other answer.? BTW, while it's true that you can only control the sound, it's way better sounding than using the cassette adapter for my XM radio (Audiovox XC-9), much neater, and I typically have it tuned to the same, some might say boring CNBC all day antway so I really only change it on weekends to Vinyl Rewind or similiar classic rock (45-46-47). I think I shall tackle doing the wife's E46 since she doesnt have Nav, if the weather holds up..I got a kit for her car for cheap from someone who didnt want it, new in the bag. Thank you ED in Metuchen.. |
That's a security code to activate the fuel cut off / alarm function for when you leave the car.
|
what would that have to do with an aux install..?
was it part of a recall? thanks Ed |
Without seeing a picture it's hard to know just what you are talking about. So either snap a picture and post it, or read the manual... you decide which is less work!

Edited: think I get it now . . . I buy this eas - 714.369.8524 | Auxiliary Audio Input - e39/X3/X5 Business CD and if I want to have the dock connector, I purchase this and plug it into the jack from the thing I bought above! eas - 714.369.8524 | iPod 3.5mm to Dock Connector Cable Is that correct? |
