Front speaker selection connected in any way to Bluetooth?
 

Hi again

I was going to replace the front speakers in my wife's car (E46), but I read on another board that they had to be dual coax because the Bluetooth module (which we have and use), uses one of the "cones" for the telephone output via the Bluetooth.

Does this make sense to anyone..? I have a nice set of JL speakers my kids bought her for Christmas, and I bought the adapter rings so they'll fit tight, but dont want to screw up her Bluetooth function.

Any experience or input would be greatly appreciated..

I know this is true in my E39 M5. I replaced my door speakers and am installing a separate midrange for the BT handsfree system. Pretty typical to do this.

I've never heard of using a separate voice coil for bluetooth on an speaker.... Most bluetooth kits worth a damn, including OEM, wire to the radio and interface to the speakers through that and that only.

If you want an OEM hookup you can get it through BSW, and if you want an aftermarket setup I bought a motorola T605 setup and never used it. It is new in the box.

In the stock mid-range speaker location. I have a 2001 M5, so there is an unused speaker grill located in the upper part of each front door. But you can put it just about anywhere.

Ah..there arent any such unused grills in the E46...

Which is not to say I couldn't add one.. So can you explain how the wiring works..? Ie, there are only 2 wires going to the stock midrange. If they are used for both audio AND BT, then do I just branch off of them?

I just cant get my head around what needs to be changed to upgrade speakers if the wiring is the same..

The E39 M5 front door speakers are essentially coaxials, with a midrange running across the top of the woofer, but with separate connections for the midrange and woofer, so there are six wires: four running to the midrange (two for the BT and two for the stereo) and two to the woofer (for the stereo).

My BT is OEM, but I ripped out my DSP amp and replaced it with a PDX-5 after adding RCA outs to my BM53 radio using a Metra adapter. When you do that on an M5, you lose the connection between the ULF unit and the front speakers. I could just re-route the wires in the trunk and play my BT through my stereo system, but I don't want to because (a) I have invested a fair amount in my front soundstage and (b) the volume without running it through the PDX-5 amp is not what would like and am therefore adding an ELK 800 10 watt PA amp to the speaker outs from the ULF unit.
