Icelink install problem

I just installed Icelink+ that I recieved from Tom in my 06 X5. It does not work. Plugged in the 3 pin and 6 pin connectors in the back. Hooked Ipod into cradle, selected a playlist, choose and played a song. Start the car, power up stereo, press mode button on dash unit, CD changer comes up, select track 1-6. When I push any track number 1-6 message on unit says "CD Check".

Any idea how to troubleshoot to get his baby working?

Sounds like it's not communicating with the IceLink module. If you plug the CD changer back in, does it still work? If so and all your connections are made properly then you may have a bad IceLink module.

dont have a CD changer...

I purposely did not order it anticipating installing the Icelink.

My only suggestion is making sure everything is hooked up properly (all good connections and connected to the right cables). If that doesn't fix it, you may have to do an exchange of the module. I would recommend an exchange of the cable too, just in case there's a defect in it.

:goodluck:

What is the Icelink module?

The "Check CD" happens on MY2005+ vehicles, I've only seen it happen on the 3-series radios - it may happen on the X5 as well. It quickly changes to the Artist/Song Title afterwards.

Are you hearing music through the speakers at all?

jtp 12-23-2005 09:31 AM

no music

It is not playing through the speakers. Using steering wheel controls I can scoll through playlists an up and down each playlist although stereo unit only shows track, i.e. TR3, not song titles. The Ipod shows "Dension, ok to disconnect", and it also shows the selected song as I scroll with the steering wheel controls.

What year is your X5? Do you possibly have DSP?

Update: Confirmed this morning, it seems you have Digital DSP and need the DSP converter. Rare for a MY2006 X5 to have this, but it is possible.

Your kit is on the way!

I tried to fit my ice link in the X5 today and having some problems

1 keeps cutting out and changing to the radio without me touching anything
2 I have lost my TV option on nav screen
3 screen keeps freezing and taking ages to change from radio to CD have to turn car on and off again to get it to work again.

On the plus side when it is working sounds great much better than the aux imput.

Some of these symptoms sounds like what was occurring on older versions of the firmware. Check to see what firmware version are you currently on to see if this might be a contributor. v2-2B2 is the latest and greatest for nav.

This sounds awfully like the problems I'm having with mine (also on a 2005 X5). I've installed the V2 2B2 firmware which has improved things, but the iPod will suddenly stop responding to the head unit and steering wheel buttons, (and the ID3 tag stops updating with the song changes) even though it carries on playing quite happily. The dealer has changed the BMW adapter board too, but to no avail.

I can change modes on the head unit but cannot control the iPod. The only way I can regain control of the iPod is to use a reset (Ipod's own 'Menu' plus 'Select' buttons until the Apple logo reappears).

I wonder if there's a more subtle problem here?

I got the TV back buy unpluging and replacing the cd changer re pluged the ice link in and all seem ok at the moment going to go for a drive and see how it goes fingers crossed.

There could be a couple of reasons this is happening:

1) The battery cables or Radio fuses were not pulled during installation.
2) There is a communication error between the iPod and ice>Link. This happens sometimes from disconnecting the iPod from the computer without "ejecting" it beforehand. A simple reset of the iPod should fix things.

Hope this helps!

That wil be it then I did not disconnect anything before I installed.Apears to be working fine now.

I have version ICEV22.B2 Which is I guess the same v2-2B2 which is in the post above.

I have noticed that the song titles change size all the time is this normal ?

Thank you Tom for the lead and the Source seletor was delivered this morning,I have not been brave enough to put the selector in yet thought I would make sure the ice link was running correctly first, I dont seem to have any surpression noise either which is one thing i was worried about.

The font size changing is a known bug, Dension is working on a solution at this time.

Thanks Tom for the quick reply

I am really getting into using the Ice link. I found out that you can scroll through the albums using the satnav much faster than using the steering wheel controls, any other useful tips that are not in the instructions?

I wish i had done the Ice link thing ages ago

Thanks

What's the trick for doing the album scrolling via nav?

With firmware v2B2, once you're in a subdirectory (such as Albums, Artists or Playlists) the NAV dial can be used to scroll through selections.

Any other little tips which we dont know about?

That would be it - the NAV dial feature was actually snuck in on me, it's nowhere on the documentation :)
