programming the e53 garage door opener.
 

hey all I recently picked up an 04 e53 and I have been trying to program the garage door opener using the instruction in the manual but I cannot get it to catch. I know my brother was able to program the opener in his TL to it so I don't think its some kind of oddball signal or something. Is there some trick here I am missing??

programming depends on the opener. If it is a smart (code cycling) model you need to push the button on the opener after you get the car into programming mode.

I have my cycling opener working on my 03 e53 and Honda CR-V that has the same homelink/eye glass holder deal I had in my 01 CL-S.

My garage doors have smart cycling codes so I had to manually push the button on the unit in the garage then go in the X and do the procedure from the manual. Worked flawless and I have both my doors programmed in the X

at my previous location i used the garage door opener in the car to turn the lights in the foyer of the house, as there were no garage doors to open, using some Home Depot gadgets...

That is pretty cool. We have one of those (X10 actually) on the pool lights.

I have 1 opening the garage door & 3 opens the gate to the community which is nice so I don't have to have another fob remote on my keychain.

I pressed the "learn" button on my garage door opener unit..

Got in the car, turned the key on, held down the 1 button on my overhead console and bam, garage door closed. That's all it took to program mine.

You can experience troubles programming the home link a couple ways. First and most obvious....you're not doing something right. Read the steps thoroughly and see what's goin on. The second (not so obvious) issue may be a hardware incompatibility. Is it a relatively new garage door opener? As of a couple years ago, homelink changed the communication protocols used in the "universal garage door opener" as a result of manufacturers switching to a more secure means of communication on their openers. Vehicles manufactured after '08 (I think?) are not affected by this change, but previous models are.

As was the case for my X, when I switched to the lift master 8500 w/ myQ, you may have to call home link and get their "repeater". It takes the signal from the X's home link and translates it into something the opener can understand.

Hey guy... Sent you a PM. Fwiw, you need to 'teach' the X to behave like a remote. Press the button same time as hand held remote.... Then, part 2. You now scale the ladder and hit the learn button and run back to the X and hit the button 3 times, blah, blah. This is so the 'new' remote (your X5) is married to the opener itself.

As some have said it depends on the head unit for you door opener. It's easy to miss a step like waiting too long to pair. Some head unit programming only allows 30 seconds. Read the instructions carefully get your ladder in place, door to the vehicle open key in ignition then try it again.

This is exactly how I programmed mine. Works perfect. Great knowledge on this site. I have the rolling code style opener.
