Voice recognition help

I have just got a voice recognition module but cannot find the blue connector in by the sat nav/cd player. I have got a UK 05 X5 with sat nav and bluetooth. I have looked at the how to article and there is a spare blue connector but it is towards the rear and much 'squarer' than the one in the picture or to fit the module. I tried to check further up behind the side cover but cannot get it away much. I took one of the plastic things off the boot (Trunk) floor but although can get to a lot of wires cannot see any spare connectors.

Any ideas?

I don't know it the UK 05 X5 is any different than mine but it was right in front of me when I looked for it. Remove the drivers side panel in the back (or boot as you brits call it) where the CD changer goes . If you have Navi look behind it on the bottom of the shelf and you will find a blue connector with a black jumper connected to it. At first the jumper looks like wires going to something else but they are only going in and out. You gotta take that jumper out. (key off of course) and plug that blue connector into the voice module. If it was a snake I would have been bitten a half a dozen time.

So I took the whole back end of the car to bits (well what I could easily) and could not find a connector. Does anyone know of other places where it might be hidden. I could not get the boot (trunk) side panel off but got a mirror and looked behing it but could not see a connector. I had the sat nav, cd changer and assist module out but still nothing.

just read a site that states that if you have assist and bluetooth you cannot have voice recognition?

Blast!!!!:tsk:

If that is true then it bloody well sucks since I have been thinking about installing the voice recognition module on mine as well.

What year X5 do you have? If you have the Assist/Bluetooth combo you should be able to connect at Voice Recognition module.

Mine was located right behind this stuff on the bottom.

HI again

I have a sept 05 model.
I have found this on the web
http://www.advancedautovations.com/e530402.html
which implies you cannot have both voice and assist. My assist does not work anyway it says "problem with phone".

I took the assist module out to check the connector just to see but it was different (not the blue one) so I do not seem to have blue one at all.

You might want to look again. Best place to find the Blue plug is BEHIND the CD changer. The location is right in the back there. The 05 has the Universal II phone wiring harness, so anyone telling you that there is no SES wiring is wrong.

on the Bimmernav site there is this line
"If you can not find this plug, it is possible your car was not prewired for voice recognition (Some Euro)"

It looks like mine is one of them. Unless I have gone completely blind (and I also got someone else to look because of this possibility) there is no spare connector behind the whole of the cd nav area? The only possibility is that it has been tucked out of the way behind the boot side panel. I do have a lot of boxes in that area and perhaps when installing they did something with my connector.

AS I said, I have both Bluetooth, assist, and voice module on my 2005 4.4

Correct, but that reference is not applicable after 03/02 Build dates where BMW went to the Universal II phone harness. I think I will stand by my position that the Voice recognition plug is present. It is possible that your car is something different from Universal II phone harness, but I think it would be unlikely.

I have been wrong before, and will bow down asking forgiveness to the BMW gods if I am wrong, but I feel confident that your car is configured with that harness that has the SES wiring.

Start at the X400 plug and work your way around there. On the X5, with FACTORY SES plug the connector is Blue with a black cap and NOT the Blue with white jumper plus as shown in that picture. That picture is the 038 SES plug, where from the factory X5s come with the P/N 61 12 6 911 421

The x400 plug is the white 12 pin connector about 1 inch above the connector my finger is on in this picture. The grey lable says KKB and INFO on it. Trace the wires that go around that plug. Half of the wires go up front to the center console and the rest snake around the trunk area to terminate at the plug my finger is on.

Very interesting. Would you believe that my 05 X5 does not require what is described to access that blue plug? Furthermore those pictures dont look like my setup so there are some major differences between UK and USA equiptment.

john348 02-15-2006 05:30 PM

Ambishop Sorry to be a pain but where are those wires. They do not look like they are in the side but perhaps under the floor in the boot (trunk not sure where you are from) . I did take out 2 of the plastic under floor pieces but did not go further to under the cover under the spare?

John

ambishop 02-15-2006 05:42 PM

That picture is a close up with the CD changer removed. The X400 plug is where I would start. Find it and then trace the wires in the trunk. It is possible that you do not have it, but would be very odd if it did not. BMW supposedly switched to a Universal phone harness for all BMWs sold in the..... "universe" but I could be totally wrong here.

ambishop 02-15-2006 05:43 PM

By the way, if you really want Voice recognition, you can nuke the assist module and drop in the ULF module. The ULF is basically a SES voice recognition module WITH Bluetooth
